Building and customizing solutions using Microsoft 365 Copilot APIs and tools
Copilot can disappear from the Outlook UI and Windows taskbar if licensing, app settings, or privacy/connected experiences change.
To restore Copilot in Outlook and on the taskbar, use these steps:
- Confirm the account and license
- In any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account.
- Ensure the primary signed-in account is one that has a Copilot license (for home: Microsoft 365 Personal/Family or Copilot Pro; for business: Microsoft 365 Business Basic/Standard/Premium, E3, E5, F1, or F3 plus Microsoft 365 Copilot).
- Refresh the Microsoft 365 license
- In the same File > Account page, select Update License.
- Close all Microsoft 365 apps (including Outlook) and reopen Outlook.
- If Copilot was missing due to a stale or recently changed license, this typically restores the Copilot button.
- Check Outlook Copilot toggle and privacy/connected experiences
- In Outlook (new Outlook on Windows, Outlook for Mac, web, iOS, or Android), go to Settings and then Copilot (or Quick Settings > Copilot on mobile/Mac).
- Ensure Turn on Copilot is enabled. If it is off, Copilot will disappear from Outlook across all devices for that account.
- If Copilot still does not appear and the Enable Copilot checkbox is not present in other apps, verify that connected experiences/privacy settings have not been turned off, because disabling connected experiences can remove Copilot and related features.
- If Copilot is missing or disabled in Microsoft 365 apps generally
- Follow the guidance in “How to find and enable missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps” (ensure correct account, latest build, and license refresh).
- If the issue persists, a Microsoft 365 admin should verify:
- The user has a license that supports Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Copilot is not blocked by organizational policies.
- Restore Copilot and companion apps on the Windows taskbar (admin-controlled)
- If Copilot disappeared from the Windows taskbar in a managed environment, an admin can:
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Go to Copilot > Settings > User access.
- Enable Pin Microsoft 365 Copilot and its companion apps to the Windows taskbar and save.
- This requires at least one active Intune license and the Intune Administrator role. On Windows 11 or later, changes can take up to eight hours to apply.
- Users can still manually pin/unpin Copilot; if it was manually unpinned, it must be pinned again from Start or All apps.
- If Copilot disappeared from the Windows taskbar in a managed environment, an admin can:
If Copilot remains missing after these steps, an admin should check whether Copilot is blocked by privacy or policy settings, or open a support case as suggested in the troubleshooting guidance.
