On Xbox One, microphone capture issues are typically caused by either app permissions, device detection, or audio levels. The available guidance is for Windows, but the same categories of checks apply.

Work through these areas in order:

    1. Check that the mic is detected and set as input
On Windows, this is done under Settings > System > Sound, choosing the correct input device and testing it. On Xbox, use the equivalent audio settings to ensure the headset/mic is recognized and selected as the active input device.
    2. Verify app permission to use the microphone
The Windows guidance shows that if apps do not have permission, the mic will not be recorded:
      • In Windows 11/10 this is controlled under Privacy/Privacy & security > Microphone, where “Allow apps to access your microphone” (or “Let apps access your microphone”) must be turned on, and desktop apps must be allowed as well.
      • On Xbox, check the privacy and app permissions settings so that game capture/recording and any related apps are allowed to use the microphone.
    3. Confirm the mic is not muted and volume is adequate
      • Ensure any physical mute switch on the headset/mic is off. A common cause in the context is a power or mute switch on the microphone being off, which makes it appear “dead” even though the device is installed.
      • In Windows, microphone level is adjusted under Settings > System > Sound > Input > Device properties / Input settings, then adjusting input volume and testing. On Xbox, use the audio settings to raise mic monitoring/input volume and test.
    4. Test whether the mic works at all
      • If possible, test the same headset/mic on another device (PC, phone, or another console). The context shows cases where the mic itself works fine on another device, which helps isolate whether the issue is with the console or the accessory.
    5. If the mic is not detected at all
On Windows, the fix is to reinstall audio drivers via Device Manager (uninstall under “Sound, video and game controllers,” restart, and let Windows reinstall). On Xbox, there is no driver manager, but a similar effect can be achieved by:
      • Fully powering down the console (not just sleep), unplugging it for a short time, then restarting.
      • Disconnecting and reconnecting the headset/mic after the restart.
    6. If the mic is detected but very low or not picked up in captures
The Windows guidance recommends increasing microphone level and using the built-in test to see the input bar move when speaking. On Xbox, adjust mic monitoring/input level and perform a test recording to confirm that voice is captured at an audible level.

If, after confirming permissions, detection, mute switch, and volume, the mic still does not appear in captures, test with a different headset/mic. If a second device works, the original accessory is likely the issue; if neither works, the console’s audio subsystem or settings may require support from Xbox Support.
