Hi,
I have problem with Microsoft Surface Book 3. The laptop can't boot Windows from disk, it ends on black screen. If I tried boot a bootable pendrive with Windows installer it goes back to BIOS settings.
I tired to install Ubuntu on laptop and it's works properly.
Recovery disk doesn't work.
What else can i try?
The firmware isn’t picking up the Windows boot‑path. A full power‑drain, removing the old Windows entry, and choosing the USB from the one‑time list usually brings it back. If it still goes straight to BIOS, the NVMe boot block is damaged and Surface Recovery is required.
So far, I've tried several methods to install Windows.
Booting the USB drive with the installer is impossible. Flashing a system image using various recovery tools (for example, Acronis True Image) also doesn't work—the laptop won't boot into the system.
What do you mean by Surface Recovery? If you mean creating a recovery drive with a system image dedicated to the Surface Book 3, I've tried that and I can't get it to work.
I should add that Windows is in the boot menu in the BIOS.
I meant the official SB3 recovery image from Microsoft’s site — the ZIP you download and unpack onto a FAT32 USB. It’s not the same thing as the standard Windows recovery USB.

If your Microsoft Surface Book 3 can run Ubuntu fine but refuses to boot Windows, that usually means the hardware is OK and the issue is with UEFI/boot configuration, SSD layout, or Windows bootloader.
Steps to follow:
On another PC, go to Microsoft Surface Recovery page
Enter your Surface Book 3 serial number
Download the recovery image
Create the recovery USB exactly as Microsoft instructs
Enter UEFI
Disable Secure Boot temporarily
Enable USB boot
Boot from USB
Full recovery / reinstall
I have tried these solution and it didn't work.
I can't boot from recovery USB, after choosing to boot from it, it gets back to UEFI.
I tried boot from recovery USB on different laptop and it boots properly.
I booted antoher bootable USB (with Ventoy) on Surface Book 3 and it boots properly, so booting from USB is fine.
Download a fresh official Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft
Copy the ISO onto the Ventoy USB
Boot Ventoy on the Surface Book 3
Select the Windows ISO
If “Normal Mode” fails:
try WIMBOOT mode
--
Press Shift + F10
diskpart
select disk 0
clean
convert gpt
exit Now install Windows.
I tried boot Windows iso from Ventoy USB in both Normal and WIMBOOT modes, and it didn't work. Laptop goes back to Ventoy list of images.
A failing NVMe can cause Windows bootloader/kernel to crash instantly while Linux still works. It may be also due to corrupted/broken Surface UEFI firmware state.
Is there any way to update or restore UEFI firmware in Surface?
