Query regarding WinUI2 deprecation plan

We are actively planning to modernize a production app which has UWP backend. Currently, we are not migrating from UWP as some of the core functionalities are getting affected related to web authentication and password vault. So, we are confused between WinUI2 vs WinUI3.

We need clarity on:

  • Is WinUI2 in maintenance mode?
  • Any deprecation timeline of WinUI2 in next 2-3 years?
  • Recommended long-term strategy (stay vs move to WinUI3)?

    Hello @Pragya Gupta ,

    Thanks for your question.

Regarding WinUI 2 maintenance mode and deprecation timeline:

There is currently no official public Microsoft documentation that explicitly confirms WinUI 2 is in "maintenance mode" or provides a formal deprecation timeline for the next 2–3 years.

For deeper guidance, I'd suggest checking with the product group through internal team - they'll confirm the best approach for you.

About long-term strategy, WinUI 3 is the recommended path for all future Windows app development. Microsoft's investments, new features, and tooling support are focused on WinUI 3 as part of the Windows App SDK.

I hope this addresses your question. If this response was helpful, please consider following the guidance to provide feedback.
