I have a Microsoft 365 Personal Classic subscription account which includes Copilot integration & apparently its built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote. However, none of the MS app's that I can see has the side bar or icon to invoke or use Copilot, albeit, Copilot is available as a standalone item.

Copilot in the Microsoft 365 desktop apps only appears when all of the following are true:

    1. The correct account and license are in use
      • For home users, the account signed into the apps must have:
        • A Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, or
        • Copilot Pro.
      • The account shown as the primary account at the top of the app window must be the one with the Copilot‑eligible subscription.
      • If the subscription is “Personal Classic” and does not include Copilot as an add‑on (for example, no Copilot Pro), Copilot features in Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook/OneNote will not appear, even if standalone Copilot on the web is available.
To verify in any Microsoft 365 app:
      1. Open Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
      2. Go to File > Account.
      3. Confirm the signed‑in account is the one with the Microsoft 365 subscription and any Copilot add‑on.
    2. The apps are updated to a Copilot‑supported build
      • Copilot is available in the Home tab of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook on the web if the account is a Copilot subscriber.
      • If there is also a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes the desktop apps, Copilot should appear in those apps when they are on a current build.
      On Windows:
      1. In any app, go to File > Account.
      2. Use Update Options > Update Now (see “Install Office updates”) to move to the latest build.
    3. The update channel and privacy settings allow Copilot (business context)
      • For business subscriptions, Copilot features are not available on Semi‑Annual Enterprise Channel. Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel is required.
      • If on Semi‑Annual Enterprise Channel, Copilot will not appear in the ribbon even with a valid Copilot license.
      • Privacy settings can also hide Copilot:
        1. File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
        2. Ensure Experiences that analyze your content and All connected experiences are turned on.
    4. Admin/region restrictions (work or school accounts)
      • If using a work/school account with a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription, Copilot might be disabled by the admin or unavailable in the region. In that case, Copilot will not appear in the apps even though the Microsoft 365 Copilot app or standalone Copilot is accessible.
    5. Classic plans without Copilot in apps
      • Classic Microsoft 365 Personal/Family plans can exist without Copilot in the Office apps. In that case, Copilot will be available only as a standalone experience (for example, in the Microsoft Copilot app or web), and no Copilot button or sidebar will appear inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote.

If the subscription is indeed a “Classic” plan without Copilot Pro or a Copilot add‑on, and all update/account checks above are satisfied, then the behavior described (standalone Copilot available, no Copilot inside apps) is expected.
