Compose message field intermittently loses focus and transfers keystrokes to Calendar Event

So over the past few weeks, I've noticed a strange issue in the online version of Teams. If I'm composing a message in Chat, the compose field will occasionally lose focus and whatever I'm typing is no longer appearing in the field.

That's not the weird part.

The weird part is that instead of appearing in the message field, my keystrokes are being registered in Calendar as the title of a New Event. I only discovered this because random events with incomplete words and sentences were appearing in my calendar. This has happened at least a dozen times over the last 2-3 weeks. Because the focus is being shifted within the app (and not to a different application altogether) tells me that this is likely an isolated issue with Teams Online itself.

I've not discovered this doing any other action in Teams (although, you don't really type anywhere else besides Calendar) and I've not noticed that it is any particular keystroke that triggers the issue, so it's difficult to reproduce.

Anyone else experience this or am I going crazy?

Seems like the focus has moved to the calendar tab but the screen has not. On most days, this seems to happen fairly randomly but often - maybe every 10 mins or so on average?

I mentioned this on a work call and at least half a dozen other people have the same issue. This is on a range of Windows 11 devices using Edge, across multiple tenancies. I've several Edge Profiles setup and it happens in all of them (not tried another browser) - one of which has no extensions.

I am experiencing the same issue. I use PWA on a Mac Mini M4 / MacOS 26.5.2 (25F84), using Microsoft Edge Version 150.0.4078.65 (Version officielle) (arm64).
When writing a message in the chat the focus moves to the calendar a create a new event with the words of my message.

Same here. Microsoft Edge Version 150.0.4078.65, Ubuntu 24. In my calendar I have multiple placeholders composed of random conversations with people on Teams. Happening for months now.

I'm seeing the same issue with a very different setup. I'm using qutebrowser on Linux. Qutebrowser is based on PyQt6's webengine (which is itself Chromium-based like Edge). The problem happens very consistently -- if I pause typing for a few seconds, focus seems to shift to the calendar -- to the point that the Teams web app isn't actually usable for me with qutebrowser.

I'm not mentioning this because I expect much support for my odd setup, but because I think it might be worth knowing that the problem affects multiple platforms.

What type of device are you using when this happens, Windows or Mac?
Which browser are you using to access Teams on the web, such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Safari, or Firefox?
Does this only happen in one browser, or does it also occur in another supported browser?
Does the same behavior continue in an InPrivate or Incognito window?
If you use browser extensions, are any of them enabled while using Teams?

Once I have this information, I'll be able to share accurate and targeted solutions for the issue.

I have the same issue using MS Teams Web/PWA with Microsoft Edge(Version 148.0.3967.83 (Official build) (64-bit)) on Ubuntu LTS. It keeps generating calendar events based on input i write in teams chat.

how to reproduce: login to teams web, i use: (https://teams.microsoft.com.mcas.ms/v2/). goto chat, start writing to a person. the cursor in the chat oftern disappear and whatever you type will not be shown, but will added as a calendar event. clicking the input box in the chat will return focus and you can write in chat again. but it may loose focus multiple times.

This issue is still occurring and a thread on Reddit has possibly identified the cause being related to MCAS proxies and continuous failures to connect to elements of the calendar.

Windows 11, Dell Laptop

First noticed in Chrome

Happens in Edge as well

EDIT: It occurs in incognito mode as well.

I have a few browser extensions - Window Resizer, WhatFont, Design Mode, WAVE, Axe Accessibility, AdGuard, Figma.

However, the majority of those, while enabled, aren't actively running. I believe the only one that is active in the background is AdGuard.

As of 7/28, this is still an ongoing issue.

@Jay Tr That's unfortunate you aren't able to help. I understand it's not a wide-spread issue, but it's also clearly not one isolated to my organization - there are other users here reporting the same problem across different devices and browsers. There's undoubtedly an underlying problem that is affecting a subset of users.

Now, I have done additional testing and found that I cannot reproduce it in the web app when logged into a different organization, using the same exact device and browser. So I will concede that there is something affecting the organization. But again, I doubt there's anything they can do. They'll just have to reach out to MS I guess.

Based on the results you described, the issue appears to be specific to your Microsoft 365 organization, since it cannot be reproduced when using the same device and browser with a different organization. While multiple users in your organization are experiencing the same behavior, I cannot confirm the exact root cause from the community side.

Since the issue has been occurring for several months and affects multiple users, I recommend opening a support ticket with Microsoft Support, as previously suggested. Microsoft support engineers can access tenant level diagnostics, review logs, and investigate the issue in greater depth to determine the underlying cause.

At this point, a support case is the best next step to help identify and resolve the problem.

@Jay Tr This is NOT specific to ONE Microsoft 365 oranization, but to MANY. However not to all organizations. So it seems to be related to the setup of an organization. And always only to the users who are using Teams via Web.

Same issue for me, has been occuring for over 12 months now.

It is happening on my macbook when using the edge browser as well as a windows 11 dell laptop using the edge browser and/or Teams PWA.

It's definitely the Teams chat input field that is the issue and it's somehow pushing the keystrokes (mid-typing) to the Outlook calendar create event. Often I am accidentally creating a new event in Calendar for the next 30min block with a title that is half a sentence I was typing in Teams. I have two browser windows open. Teams in one window and various other sites in the other. Outlook Calendar is not open in any browser tab however Outlook mail is.

Not only Teams/browser; this is symptomatic of a problem that has existed for some years in Microsoft Office desktop applications; the multiple windows of the one running Outlook.EXE process get confused about which window is on top/ should have focus.

It's a much more basic quality problem than any one odd setup, and it's shameful that Microsoft has allowed it to persist.

(I see this on multiple Windows 11 desktops, over the past couple of years of Office-from-Microsoft-365 software installations, across at least two different Microsoft 365 user accounts).
