Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Use the following checks and workarounds to restore missing AOL mail in Outlook for Windows (Classic):
- Confirm the issue is only in Outlook
- Sign in to AOL webmail (https://www.aol.com).
- Verify that the “missing” messages are present in AOL webmail. If they are not there, the issue is on the AOL side and must be addressed with AOL support.
- Check for rules, filters, and other folders in Outlook
- In Outlook, check all folders (including Junk, RSS Feeds, Archive, and custom folders) to see if messages are being diverted.
- Check Outlook rules for any rule that might be moving or deleting incoming mail. Hidden or unexpected rules can silently redirect all new mail (for example, to the RSS Feeds folder). Remove or disable such rules.
- Check Outlook.com/connected account behavior (if using Outlook.com as a connector)
If the AOL account is connected through Outlook.com or another service:
- Make sure there are no filters or focused inbox settings hiding messages (Other tab, filters, or sort order).
- Verify there are no forwarding settings or rules in that service that move or delete mail.
- Address known AOL/Outlook sync issues
There are known issues where AOL accounts stop syncing or re‑syncing correctly in Outlook: a. Older AOL sync issue (folders under Inbox)
- For some AOL accounts, Outlook stopped syncing due to a change in AOL’s service. A common mitigation is to adjust folders under the AOL Inbox via AOL webmail:
- In Outlook, note which folders exist directly under the AOL Inbox.
- Close Outlook.
- Sign in to AOL webmail.
- Either:
- Rename each folder under Inbox (for example, “Recipes” → “Recipes1”), or
- Create new folders, move all mail from the old folders into the new ones, then delete the old folders (ensure all mail is moved first, as deleted-folder mail may not be recoverable).
- Reopen Outlook and allow time for a full sync.
- When AOL is configured as IMAP, messages may intermittently disappear and reappear in folders due to re‑sync issues.
- The documented workaround for Mac is to switch to the new Outlook for Mac. On Windows, ensure the account is configured correctly as IMAP and allow time for re‑sync; if the behavior matches the described intermittent disappearing/reappearing, this is likely the same class of issue.
- For some AOL accounts, Outlook stopped syncing due to a change in AOL’s service. A common mitigation is to adjust folders under the AOL Inbox via AOL webmail:
- Verify password and authentication/app password
- If the AOL password was recently changed, update the account credentials in Outlook.
- If Outlook prompts with a message like “Please create an app password for Outlook on your email provider's site,” generate an app password in AOL and use that in Outlook instead of the normal password.
- Check third‑party/connected app requirements
- If the AOL account is being accessed via Outlook.com or another service as a connected account, ensure the service supports modern authentication and IMAP as required. If POP/IMAP settings are enabled in a way that conflicts with the connected app, disable POP/IMAP there and re‑test.
- If only some senders are affected
- If mail from specific senders is missing, ask those senders to review “Sender Support in Outlook.com” if they are sending to an Outlook.com address that then pulls from AOL, or to verify delivery on their side.
If, after these steps, AOL mail still does not reliably arrive in Outlook but appears correctly in AOL webmail, the remaining remediation must be done with AOL support, as the underlying issues are on the AOL/IMAP provider side.
