Excel stock price refresh not working

Stock price data in Excel comes from online data sources and is not under user control. When stock quotes stop refreshing, the usual causes are temporary issues with those external data providers or with the Excel linked data types service.

• Stock information is retrieved from online sources and is provided “as‑is” and can be delayed.
• If Excel cannot match or retrieve data, the stock data type may show a generic error icon instead of the normal stock icon. In that case:
  • Check for spelling issues in the ticker or name.
  • Click the icon in the cell (or select the cell and press Ctrl+Shift+F5) to re-resolve the data type and see all available fields.
  • If the selector pane appears, search again and select the correct instrument.
• For formulas that reference stock data types or use STOCKHISTORY, refresh depends on those same online services. If there is a service or provider interruption, refresh will fail or return stale data until the service is restored.

If the issue started suddenly at a specific time and affects all stock quotes, it is most likely a temporary problem with the online data source or the Excel data types service. In that case, wait and try again later, then:

1. Open the workbook and select a cell with a stock data type.
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+F5 (Refresh All) to force a full refresh.
3. If a particular ticker still fails, click its icon and re-select the correct security from the selector pane.

If only one workbook is affected while others work, try copying the tickers into a new workbook, converting them to the Stocks data type again, and refreshing.
