A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
The error AADSTS5000225 indicates that the Microsoft Entra tenant linked to the Azure subscription is blocked due to inactivity. When a tenant is blocked this way, sign-in to Azure Portal and related services is prevented.
To address this, follow these steps based on tenant state and timing:
- Check if the tenant is only recently blocked (within 20 days)
- Tenants blocked due to inactivity can be reactivated only within 20 days of entering the inactive state. After 20 days, the tenant is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
- If you are the tenant administrator and it has been less than 20 days
- Request reactivation directly from Microsoft:
- Contact Microsoft using the global support phone numbers listed in the data-protection/inaccessible-tenant guidance.
- Provide the tenant details (tenant ID or tenant name) and explain that the tenant is blocked with error
AADSTS5000225and needs reactivation. - Do not submit multiple support requests for the same issue; wait for the decision on the initial case.
- Request reactivation directly from Microsoft:
- If the tenant has been inactive longer than 20 days
- The tenant is deleted and cannot be recovered.
- In this case, create or use another tenant to continue Azure training or usage. For example:
- Sign in to https://entra.microsoft.com, go to Entra ID → Overview → Manage tenants, and create a new tenant.
- Then access Azure Portal using the new tenant domain name in the URL, such as
https://portal.azure.com/<yourTenantName>.onmicrosoft.com.
- If you signed up for a free Azure account and see this error immediately or shortly after signup
- Some users with a free account have resolved similar issues by going to https://signup.azure.com in a clean browser session (for example, an incognito window with cookies/cache cleared) and signing in with the same account used for the free trial.
- If the page indicates an existing free account with remaining benefits, complete the guided steps (such as upgrading to a pay-as-you-go account with basic/no charges) to re-enable access, then return to the Azure Portal.
- If access is still blocked after these steps
- If the tenant is within the 20‑day window, continue working with Microsoft support (phone support or the Azure support channel available to the account) for tenant reactivation.
- If the tenant is past the 20‑day window and deleted, use a new tenant for Azure Portal and training scenarios.
