Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
There is a known issue where Microsoft 365/Outlook.com accounts can stop working in Apple Mail, even though they still work in Microsoft apps or on the web. To fix this, try the following steps on the Apple device.
- First try re‑entering the account credentials
- Open the Settings app on the Apple device.
- Go to Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts (or Mail > Accounts depending on iOS version).
- Select the Microsoft 365/Outlook.com account.
- When prompted, choose Edit Settings (or similar) and re‑enter the Microsoft account email and the new password.
- If that does not work, remove and re‑add the account in Apple Mail
- Open Settings.
- Go to Mail > Accounts.
- Tap the Microsoft 365/Outlook.com account, then tap Delete Account.
- Go back to Mail > Accounts and tap Add Account.
- For a work/school Microsoft 365 account, choose Microsoft Exchange and sign in with the updated credentials.
- For an Outlook.com/Hotmail/Live account, choose Outlook.com so Apple Mail uses modern authentication (OAuth) instead of basic auth.
- If using Outlook.com and still seeing password prompts or connection errors in Apple Mail
- Remove the Outlook.com account again from Settings > Mail > Accounts.
- Open Settings > Safari and tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Reboot the iPhone/iPad.
- Go back to Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account.
- Choose Outlook.com and complete the sign‑in flow.
If the Microsoft account password was recently changed, ensure the same new password is used when re‑adding the account. If the password is forgotten again, reset it using the standard Microsoft account/organization process before repeating the steps above.
