Copilot in Word only appears when the account and app meet specific requirements. To get Copilot back in Word, follow these checks and fixes in order:

    1. Confirm the correct subscription and account
      • Sign in to Word with the same Microsoft account that has the Copilot entitlement.
      • For home use, the account must have Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with Copilot Pro, or a Copilot subscription as described in the article.
      • Make sure the account shown at the top of the Word window (the primary account) is the one with Copilot. For new/unsaved or local files, that primary account must be licensed for Copilot.
    2. Make sure Word is fully updated
      • On Windows: in any Microsoft 365 app, go to File > Account, then use Update Options to install the latest Office updates (see “Install Office updates”).
      • On Mac: follow the steps in Update Office for Mac automatically to get the latest build.
    3. Refresh the Copilot license in the apps
      • On Windows:
        1. Open Word (or any Microsoft 365 app).
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Select Update License.
        4. Close all Office apps and reopen Word.
      • On Mac:
        1. In Word, select Word in the top menu.
        2. Select About Word.
        3. Select More Info….
        4. Select Refresh License.
        5. Close all Office apps and reopen Word.
    4. Check privacy settings (required for Copilot to appear)
      • On Windows:
        1. Open Word.
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
        4. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
        5. Scroll down and turn on All connected experiences.
      • On Mac:
        1. Open Word.
        2. Go to Word > Preferences > Privacy.
        3. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
        4. Turn on All connected experiences.
    5. If using Word on the web
      • Refresh the browser page.
      • If Copilot still does not appear, enable third-party cookies in the browser, because blocking them can prevent Copilot from validating the license. See “I am getting license validation errors with Copilot.”
    6. If Copilot is still missing
      • For home users: after these steps, contact Microsoft Support for help with license validation as described in “I am getting license validation errors with Copilot.”
      • If the subscription was changed (for example, moved to a classic plan without Copilot), switch back to a plan that includes Copilot Pro using the subscription management options described in the classic vs Copilot plan guidance.

Once the correct Copilot-enabled subscription is active on the right account, Office is updated, the license is refreshed, and privacy settings are enabled, the Copilot button should reappear on the Home tab in Word.
