To activate and use Python in Excel, confirm both availability and how to turn it on in a workbook.

  1. Confirm that the Excel build and channel support Python in Excel:
    • On Windows, Python in Excel is available for Enterprise and Business users on:
      • Current Channel starting with Version 2408 (Build 17928.20114)
      • Monthly Enterprise Channel starting with Version 2408 (Build 17928.20216)
      • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel starting with Version 2502 (Build 18526.20472)
    • For Family and Personal subscriptions, it is available in preview on the Current Channel on Windows starting with Version 2405 (Build 17628.20164).
    • For Education subscriptions, it is available via Microsoft 365 Insider Program using the Current Channel (Preview) Insider level starting with Version 2406 (Build 17726.20016).
    • Python in Excel is not supported on device-based or shared computer activation subscriptions.
If the subscription or channel does not match one of the supported combinations above, Python in Excel will not be available even if the Insider/Beta channel is enabled.
  2. Enable Python in Excel in a workbook (once the correct build and subscription are in place):
    • Open a blank workbook in Excel for Windows.
    • Go to the Formulas tab on the ribbon.
    • Select Insert Python.
    • Alternatively, in any cell type =PY and choose PY from the AutoComplete list to start a Python cell.
  3. If Python cells show #BLOCKED!:
    • Ensure access to Microsoft 365 connected services is available, because Python in Excel runs in the Microsoft Cloud.
    • If the subscription is device-based or uses shared computer activation, Python in Excel is not supported and will not work.

Once enabled, Python formulas can be authored directly in the grid. With a qualifying subscription, standard compute and automatic recalculation are available; premium compute and additional calculation modes require the Python in Excel add-on license.
