Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
On Windows laptops this behavior is usually controlled by power and energy settings rather than Outlook or other apps.
To stop the backlight turning off after about 10 seconds, adjust the screen timeout and related energy features:
- Open power and energy settings
- Select Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Select Energy recommendations.
- Increase screen timeout
- In Energy recommendations, apply or change the setting Turn off my screen after 3 (or 10) minutes to a higher value that suits the usage.
- This sets how long the screen stays on before the backlight turns off to save power.
- Check automatic brightness features (if brightness seems to “drop” rather than fully turn off)
- In Energy recommendations, review:
- Save power by screen contrast and brightness for the content shown – turn this off if sudden brightness changes are unwanted or if color accuracy is important.
- Change brightness automatically when lighting around me changes – turn this off if ambient light changes are causing the screen to dim unexpectedly.
- In Energy recommendations, review:
- If the device sleeps instead of just dimming
- In Energy recommendations, if available, review Automatically put my device to sleep when I leave and turn it off if the device is going to sleep when moving away from it.
If the backlight still turns off after ~10 seconds even with longer timeouts configured, this can indicate a hardware issue (panel, cable, or sensor) and the device manufacturer’s support should be contacted.
