My Hotmail account (******@hotmail.com) has been linked to an Azure AD work account in Microsoft’s Default Directory (tenant ID:PII). As a result, I cannot use my private Microsoft account properly, and I am forced into a work account that should not exist. I need you to remove the Azure AD account so that my private account works again.

Hey Jacob Laugesen, it sounds like your Hotmail-based Microsoft account (MSA) got inadvertently added as a user in the “Default Directory” Azure AD tenant, so every time you sign in you get treated like a work/school account. To get your private MSA back to “pure” consumer status, you need that guest/external entry removed from Azure AD. Here’s how:

If you’re the directory’s Global Administrator a. Sign in to the Azure portal (https://portal.azure.com) with an admin account. b. Browse to Azure Active Directory → Users → All users. c. Search for your Hotmail address. d. Select the user and click Delete to remove it from the tenant.

If you’re not a directory admin • You’ll need to contact whoever manages that Default Directory tenant and ask them to follow the steps above. • Alternatively, on your Microsoft account profile (https://account.microsoft.com), go to “Access work or school” and click “Disconnect” next to that directory. That signals Azure AD to drop the link—admins may still need to finalize deletion.

Once the entry is gone, your Hotmail account will revert to standard personal behavior again, and you’ll stop getting treated like a work/school identity.

The directory’s Global Administrator is Microsoft as it is microsofts directory. Then who do i contact and how? I tried chat and they sent me to https://support.serviceshub.microsoft.com/supportforbusiness/create but there are many hundreds of possible choises and none of them seem right. And over the phone i just go around in circles with the stupid ai.

Thank you for the clarification. After reviewing this scenario, your Hotmail account has not been converted into a work account, and it is not incorrectly linked to a tenant that can be removed.

What you are seeing is expected Microsoft identity behavior.

All personal Microsoft accounts (Hotmail / Outlook.com / Live.com) have a home tenant owned by Microsoft called Microsoft Services. This is a Microsoft‑managed tenant with a well‑known tenant ID, and it cannot be administered, modified, or removed by end users.

Because of this design:

Admin portals (Azure portal, Entra admin center, My Apps) may treat sign‑ins as a work/school experience

It can look like a work account, but it is not an organizational account you joined

There is no Azure AD / Entra user object that can be deleted from this tenant

The Microsoft Services directory is your home organization

Home organizations cannot be left or deleted

Even Microsoft Support cannot manually remove this relationship

Only guest (#EXT#) organizations can be exited

If your personal account was added as a guest to another tenant:

Open this link in an InPrivate / Incognito browser https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations

Under Other organizations, select Leave organization

This only removes guest access. It does not affect your personal Microsoft account.

If no other organizations appear there, then nothing is incorrectly linked.

Microsoft guidance is:

Use your personal Microsoft account only for consumer services (Outlook.com, OneDrive personal, Microsoft Store, subscriptions)

For Azure or Entra ID administration:

Create a separate tenant

Create a work/school account in that tenant

Use that account for Azure, Entra ID, and app registrations

Use an InPrivate / Incognito browser when signing in with a personal account to avoid automatic redirects

This behavior is by design and does not indicate an error, corruption, or an account that Microsoft Support can remove.

Are you sure that it is by design that the Authenticator app does not work like it uset to do? Screenshot_20260421-230551_Authenticator.png The logon without passcode fails every time. And there are no popups. And it tis not the settings on the phone or the app. All settings are tested and the app have been installed again.

Help me get it to work. What i stated here is what Copilot told me after an hour of trying differet things. And it is what your chat support told me.

Based on your description, this behavior is not expected for the Authenticator app. Passwordless sign-in should trigger a prompt, so the absence of notifications usually indicates a registration issue rather than a settings problem.

I recommend removing and re-adding the Authenticator method:

Go to https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info

Remove the existing Microsoft Authenticator entry

Add it again and complete the setup

Ensure “Passwordless phone sign-in” is enabled in the app

Also, try signing in once using password + OTP to confirm the account is working correctly.
