A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
Because the card is linked to an Azure subscription, it can’t be removed until the Azure side is resolved. The situation has two parts: fixing Azure access and then managing/removing the card.
- Verify the account type and sign-in
- Azure requires either a Microsoft personal account (MSA) or a work/school (Microsoft Entra) account. If the email domain is hosted in Azure, it can’t be used as a “Personal” account in some scenarios.
- If sign-in is failing because of mixed personal vs work account, first sign out of all Microsoft sessions, then use a private/incognito browser window and go directly to the Azure portal and choose the correct account type when prompted.
- If the account is blocked during sign-up or subscription creation, follow the Azure sign-up troubleshooting steps to clear profile or eligibility issues.
- Check for sign-up / subscription issues
- If Azure shows messages like “We cannot proceed with sign-up due to an issue with your account” or “You are not eligible for an Azure subscription,” validate:
- Profile data (name, address, phone, email) is complete and correct.
- Card details (name, address, CVV) exactly match bank records.
- No other Microsoft account is using the same identity information.
- If the account type is reported as “not supported” (for example, tied to an unmanaged Microsoft Entra directory), either:
- Use a different account to sign up, or
- Perform an admin takeover of the unmanaged directory as described in the sign-up troubleshooting article.
- If Azure shows messages like “We cannot proceed with sign-up due to an issue with your account” or “You are not eligible for an Azure subscription,” validate:
- Card/identity verification issues
- If the card was used only for identity verification and the Azure subscription was never fully created, the card can still appear as linked.
- Common problems:
- Virtual or prepaid cards are not accepted.
- Card not valid for the selected country/region.
- Third-party cookies blocked, causing the identity verification step to hang.
- Ensure:
- A supported, non-prepaid card is used.
- The billing address country/region matches what was entered in the “About you” section.
- Third-party cookies are allowed, then retry the sign-up flow.
- If the card is declined or blocked
- If the card was declined at sign-up or later, check:
- Card is active and enabled for international/online transactions.
- Name, address, and CVV match exactly.
- If threshold billing authorizations are being declined, update the primary payment method as described in the declined-card article.
- If the card was declined at sign-up or later, check:
- Removing or changing the card
- By design, a payment method that is actively associated with a subscription cannot be removed.
- To remove the card, one of the following must happen:
- Add a new card, associate it with the subscription, then delete the old card; or
- Cancel the Azure subscription permanently, then remove the card.
- If a new card was added but the old one still can’t be deleted, ensure the new card is actually associated with the subscription before retrying removal.
- If removal fails due to an outstanding balance, all charges must be paid before the payment method can be deleted.
- When self-service steps are not enough
- If Azure sign-up never completed correctly, or the subscription is not visible but the card is still locked to Azure, this can indicate an account flag or back-end issue.
- In that case, create a support request from the Azure portal support entry point (or via the Microsoft account support pages if Azure portal access is blocked) and select billing/payment as the issue type. The Azure billing/support team can:
- Confirm whether a subscription exists and is active.
- Clear sign-up/account flags so the subscription becomes visible.
- Help disassociate the card once the subscription state is corrected.
If access to Azure cannot be restored due to account-type conflicts (for example, personal vs work/tenant issues) and self-service sign-up troubleshooting does not resolve it, escalation through official support is required to either fix the tenant association or manually adjust the billing/payment linkage.
