Hello,

I have OneNote on my tablet. I have been using it specifically for my master's thesis as it automatically syncs to OneDrive, so I thought it was a safe place to work in. Yesterday, OneNote on my tablet went into "read-only", thinking this was just a bug, I decided to log off and on quickly. To my surprise, both sections that contained llof master's thesis work are gone. I have not been able to find a shred of evidence of their existence anywhere.

Can you give me any help in the hopes that I can get my months worth of work back?

As far as I can understand it looks like somehow those two section were never uploaded to onedrive, which is very weird as I saw it constantly doing sync activities.

I have just now encountered the same problem. With OnNote on my android smartphone.

Years of work erased after relogin to my Microsoft account after a sudden read-only issue.

This seems to be a recurring issue.

Please did you find a way to recover onnote pages?

I have just now encountered the same problem. With OnNote on my android smartphone.

Years of work erased after relogin to my Microsoft account after a sudden read-only issue.

This seems to be a recurring issue.

Please did you find a way to recover onnote pages?

I can see that you are having issue with OneNote data lost

Because Q&A Assist has already suggested several troubleshooting methods, I would like to add an additional data recovery method for you to try:

Another recovery path worth checking is whether this notebook was ever opened in OneNote for Windows or Mac. Those versions can keep local backups or deleted-note history that Android does not provide in the same way. For example, on Windows there is a File > Info > Open Backups path that can sometimes contain older section files

If the notebook only ever existed on the Android tablet, and those missing sections had not fully synced before the sign-out, recovery may be very limited. Signing out, reinstalling, or clearing app data while notes are still unsynced can remove the only local copy of those changes.

Thanks for the inputs.
No, I have never actually opened it on another platform. However, after it disappeared, I opened the book on my PC and saw that those sections were not present.

So I believe that when I created the sections (in December), the sync must have failed, and somehow the program never uploaded the sections, keeping them in the cache of my tablet. When the tablet was set to Read-Only, and I tried to fix it by logging off and on, the cache was deleted.
I have tried to find the sections in the deleted etc., and I just can't find any trace of my sections.

If indeed true, this is quite a disappointing performance for such a software.

From your description, it sounds like the sections were created on the Android tablet but never successfully synced.

In that case, they would only exist locally on the device. If the app was later set to read-only and then signed out or reset, the local cache (where those unsynced sections were stored) can be cleared, which may result in the content no longer being accessible.

At this stage, recovery options are unfortunately very limited. As a final resort, I suggest try contacting Microsoft for further assistance:

Open a website link - Contact - Microsoft Support

In the box below "We're here to help", type Microsoft 365, click "Get Help", and then click "Contact Support" below.

In this section, you will need to sign in to your Microsoft account.

Select "Microsoft 365 and Office" under Products & Services, select "Technical Support" as the category, and click to confirm

You can select " Chat with a support agent in your web browser " to access the chat window.

Hello Xavier,

Thank you for your input. I considered my information lost.

However, now I have encountered a new similar problem. I remade a new section in my tablet to restart my work, and for some days it synced correctly, but since some days I can no longer review the newest work on my laptop, making me think that the syncing is failing again. Do you have any advice on how to solve this sync problem?

Thank you for the update.

If your newest work is visible on the tablet but not on the laptop, that usually means the latest changes have not fully synced to the cloud yet, or the laptop is still showing an older notebook state. Here is what you can do:

Check the notebook in OneNote for the web first.

If the newest work appears there, the issue is likely with the laptop refreshing the notebook. If it does not appear there, the tablet has not finished uploading the latest changes yet.

Force a sync on the tablet.

In OneNote, open the notebook, tap the three dots menu, and choose Sync notebook (or Sync all). Keep the tablet awake and connected to a stable internet connection until syncing finishes.

Refresh the notebook on the laptop.

Close the affected notebook, then reopen it. This can reset the connection and pull in the latest synced content.

Make sure both devices are fully updated.

Older app versions can sometimes cause sync inconsistencies between devices.

Try the following recovery paths in order.

Check if the missing content was moved, not deleted

On any device with OneNote, use the global search (for example, Ctrl+E on Windows desktop) for a unique word or phrase from the missing thesis sections.
If the content was accidentally moved to another page or section, search will locate it.

Check OneNote’s Notebook Recycle Bin (if the notebook is shared / cloud-based) On OneNote for Windows (desktop):
Open the notebook that contained the thesis.
Select History > Notebook Recycle Bin > Notebook Recycle Bin.
Look for deleted pages/sections that might correspond to the missing thesis work.
To restore:
- Right‑click the page tab you want to recover and choose Move or Copy.
- In Move or Copy Pages, select the target section and choose Move.
- Repeat for all relevant pages.
Check OneDrive directly for the notebook and its history Because the notebook syncs to OneDrive, verify the notebook and its versions there:
Sign in to the OneDrive website at https://www.onedrive.com.
Browse likely folders such as Documents or Notebooks and locate the OneNote notebook file for the thesis.
Open it in OneNote for the web, then choose Open in OneNote to view it in the desktop app.
If the notebook or sections appear but are missing recent content, use OneDrive/SharePoint version history (if available for that notebook’s storage location) to restore an earlier version of the affected section or page.
Search OneDrive for any related files If there is a chance the thesis content was exported or copied to other files:
On the OneDrive website, use Search everything at the top.
Search not only by filename but also by keywords, tags, dates, or places related to the thesis (for example, topic terms, “docx”, “pdf”, etc.).
Also check the Recycle bin on the left side of the OneDrive website and restore any relevant items.
Check OneNote on all devices and sync status

On Android and any other device (PC, Mac, iOS), open the same notebook and verify whether the missing sections appear on any of them.
On mobile, manually sync the notebook (for example, by pulling down on the notebook list or section list where supported) to ensure all changes from the cloud are visible.

If nothing appears in search, recycle bins, or version history

If the notebook synced after the sections disappeared and there is no older version or backup, recovery options are very limited.
In that case, report the issue with full details (account type, devices, approximate dates when the content last existed) in the OneNote forums so product support can check for any additional options.
