WINDOWS 7 USB RECOVERY PROBLEM

Windows 7 product keys are not stored in a simple file that can be read from outside the installed system. For Windows 7 and 8.1, the product key is normally obtained in one of these ways:

• If Windows came preinstalled on the PC, the key is printed on a sticker on the device.
• If a physical copy of Windows was purchased, the key is on a label or card inside the box.

If the sticker on the device is damaged and only part of the key is readable, and there is no way to boot into Windows to extract it from the registry, the remaining characters cannot be reliably recovered from the partial key alone.

In this situation, the supported options are:

1. Check any original Windows 7 packaging, DVD case, or documentation for the full key.
2. If Windows 7 was preinstalled, contact the PC manufacturer with the device details (including serial number) to see if they can provide the original product key.
3. If the key cannot be recovered from documentation or the manufacturer, a new Windows license is required for reinstall/activation.

For Windows 7 specifically, Microsoft documentation states that if the product key is lost and cannot be found on the sticker, in the box, or via the manufacturer, it cannot be retrieved by Microsoft and a new license is needed.
