An Azure service that is used to set up labs for classrooms, trials, development and testing, and other scenarios.
The error about a subscription usually means the student account is signed in correctly but doesn’t have any active Azure subscription attached yet.
Use these steps depending on what is being used:
- If using Azure Dev Tools for Teaching from a university:
- Make sure the sign-in uses the school/university email address that belongs to the institution’s domain, not a random personal address.
- If there is no Microsoft account for that email yet, create one first at the Microsoft account page using the university email.
- If there is already a personal Microsoft account (for example for Xbox), add the university email as a sign-in alias:
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page.
- Sign in with the existing Microsoft account.
- Go to Your info → Manage how you sign in to Microsoft.
- Verify identity, then select Add email and add the university email address.
- Next time, sign in with the university email to access Azure Dev Tools for Teaching.
- If sign-in still fails or the portal still asks for a subscription, contact the subscription admin at the institution or use the support link in the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching FAQ.
- If using Azure for Students (free student subscription with credit):
- If the portal says there is no subscription, the Azure for Students subscription might be disabled because:
- All free credit was used, or
- The 12‑month period expired.
- In that case, to continue using Azure services, the subscription must be upgraded to a pay‑as‑you‑go subscription by contacting Azure support.
- If the subscription was accidentally canceled, it can also be reactivated by contacting Azure support.
- If the portal says there is no subscription, the Azure for Students subscription might be disabled because:
- If the portal shows “No subscriptions found”:
- In the Azure portal, select the account icon (top right) and choose Switch directory, then pick the other directory if more than one exists.
- If the correct directory is already selected and there is still no subscription, the account might not have any subscription or might not have permissions. In that case, a subscription owner/admin must assign access, or a support request must be opened.
If none of these steps work and the portal still asks for a subscription, the next action is to create a support request from the Azure portal (if possible) or use the student support/contact links provided in the education documentation so Microsoft can check the account and subscription status.
