Hi @ALREEM SALEH MOHAMED SHAKER AAL MOHAMED,

Regarding your issue, may I kindly ask a few questions to help understand it better?

    • I saw that you posted your question under the Education category so to better support you, would you mind letting me know what type of Microsoft subscription are you using?
    • Does this happen with all chats, or only with a specific chat or class?
    • Are you using Teams desktop app, web (browser), or mobile app?
    • Is this a 1:1 chat, group chat, channel conversation, or a meeting chat?
    • When you say the chat is muted, do you see a mute icon, or are you getting a message that you can’t send messages at all?
    • Are you able to unmute the chat manually by selecting More options (⋯) > Unmute, or is that option unavailable?
    • Could you provide a screenshot of the issue (make sure to hide your personal information) if possible?

Hope to hear back from you soon.

The initial response may not fully address your needs, but it will help me better understand your situation. Once I get the information, I will try my best to find the next steps.

In Microsoft Teams, muting a chat only stops notifications; it does not prevent starting or sending messages in that chat. If chat truly cannot be used (cannot start or participate in conversations), this is usually due to school/tenant settings in Teams for Education, not a user-side mute.

To check and unmute a chat (if it is just muted):

    On desktop:

    1. Open Chat and go to the conversation.
    2. Point to the chat to reveal More options (three dots).
    3. Select Unmute.

    On mobile:

    1. Open Chat and tap the conversation.
    2. Tap the top of the chat.
    3. Toggle Mute chat off.

If it is not a simple mute and chat cannot be started at all in Teams for Education:

    1. Make sure the Teams app is updated to the latest version.
    2. If still unable to initiate or participate in chats, the school’s IT administrator may have:
      • Disabled private chat for students, or
      • Given limited/supervised chat permissions so new chats cannot be started.
    3. In that case, use a class channel to communicate and @mention the educator, or contact the school/IT administrator and ask them to review chat permissions for the account.

Only the IT administrator can change those organization-wide chat restrictions; they cannot be removed from within Teams by the student.
