My personal email is tied to a Entra Identity that according to Copilot was created by Microsoft

The situation matches the case where a personal Microsoft account (MSA) uses the same email address as a work/school identity in Microsoft Entra ID. This causes the account-selection and “tied to an organization” behavior.

To separate the personal family account from the Entra ID, use these steps and options:

1. Understand the two identities
   • The personal Microsoft account (MSA) is what is used for consumer services (Outlook.com, Xbox, OneDrive, family group, etc.).
   • The Microsoft Entra ID account is the work/school identity created in an organization’s tenant. In some cases, this is created automatically by an organization whose domain matches the personal email domain.
2. Option 1 – Rename the personal Microsoft account (recommended when separation is needed) This keeps the Entra ID identity intact but moves the personal account to a different sign-in address so they no longer conflict.
   • Go to the Manage how you sign in section of the Microsoft account.
   • Add a new email address (alias) or choose an existing alias.
   • Select Make primary for the new address.
   • After this, sign in to personal services with the new alias. The Entra ID identity will continue to use the original domain-based address. Notes from the guidance:
   • An alias shares the same inbox, contacts, and settings as the primary alias.
   • Only one password is needed for all aliases.
   • Be cautious if Visual Studio or MSDN subscriptions, or Xbox Developer scenarios, are tied to the current sign-in address.
3. Option 2 – Ask the organization/tenant owner to remove the Entra ID account If the Entra ID account was created in an organization’s tenant that uses the same domain (for example, if Microsoft created a tenant for that domain or if another organization owns it):
   • Contact the organization/tenant administrator and request removal of the work/school account associated with the personal email.
   • Once removed, only the personal MSA will remain for that email address, and the “which account do you want to use?” behavior will stop.
4. If the Entra tenant was auto-created for the custom domain
   • If Microsoft created an Entra tenant for the custom domain and that tenant is now effectively the “organization,” an administrator account in that tenant is required to manage or remove identities.
   • In that case, an internal admin account must be created in that tenant, and then that admin can remove or adjust the personal account’s presence in the tenant. (This pattern is used when a personal account is blocking closure or separation due to an organization link.)
5. After separation
   • Use the personal MSA (with its new alias if renamed) for all consumer/family features.
   • Use the Entra ID account only where organizational access is required.

If self-service options are blocked (for example, no access to an admin in the tenant), escalation through Microsoft support for the correct product area (Outlook/consumer account vs. Entra ID/Azure) is required so that the account can be manually adjusted or removed from the tenant.
