When attempting to embed data from a power bi report into a power point presentation, I get the following error message. Sorry we can't load the add-in. Please make sure you have network and/or internet connectivity. I have done this many times in the past.

    Hi @Robin Rose,

The error message “Sorry we can’t load the add‑in. Please make sure you have network and/or internet connectivity” is actually quite common, and in most cases it’s not caused by your internet connection itself. Based on similar cases, the most likely reason is that a required component or system prerequisite is missing or not working as expected.

One of the main things to check is whether Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is installed on your machine. The Power BI add‑in for PowerPoint relies on WebView2, and if it’s missing, outdated, or not functioning correctly, the add‑in may fail to load. Please refer: Troubleshoot the Power BI add-in for PowerPoint - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Screenshot of the add-in Security Info window that shows whether WebView2 is installed.

Even so, it’s still a good idea to confirm that your device has a stable internet connection. In some environments, firewall rules, antivirus software, VPNs, or proxy settings can block the add‑in from accessing required services. If applicable, you may want to temporarily disable the VPN or test from a different network to see if the behavior changes.

Please also make sure that both Windows and Office are fully up to date, as outdated versions can sometimes cause compatibility issues with Office add‑ins.

Another point worth checking is Windows Information Protection (WIP). If the PowerPoint file is protected by WIP, the Power BI add‑in may be blocked from running, as WebView2 and the Power BI add‑in don’t support certain protected presentations.

I’d suggest starting with the steps above and seeing whether they help improve the situation. If the issue still persists, or if you have any updates to share, please feel free to leave a comment under this post. That will make it easier for me to get notified and continue assisting you.

    Thank you for your understanding.

The error indicates the Power BI add-in in PowerPoint cannot load. The most common causes in this scenario are missing or unsupported WebView2, or an unsupported Office/Windows build, or protection by Windows Information Protection.

    Use these checks and fixes:

    1. Confirm the Power BI add-in is correctly installed
    • In PowerPoint, go to InsertGet Add-ins (or My Add-insADMIN MANAGED in some environments) and ensure Microsoft Power BI is available and can be added to a slide.
    • If the button is missing, add or re-add the add-in from the Office Add-ins store or from the admin-managed list as described in the Power BI add-in documentation.
    1. Install or repair WebView2
    • The Power BI add-in requires Microsoft Edge WebView2 to run Power BI inside PowerPoint. If WebView2 is not installed, the add-in cannot load.
    • Install WebView2 from the official Microsoft download page referenced in the troubleshooting article: Download Microsoft Edge WebView2.
    • After installation, close all Office apps and reopen PowerPoint.
    • In the add-in side pane, open Security Info and verify Runtime: Microsoft Edge is shown, which confirms WebView2 is active.
    1. Verify Office and Windows meet minimum requirements If WebView2 is installed but the add-in still cannot run, verify the environment meets the minimum requirements:
    • Office version:
      • Microsoft 365 subscription: Build 16.0.13530.20424 or later.
      • Perpetual Office: Office 2021 or later.
    • Windows version:
      • With Microsoft 365 subscription: Windows 8.1, 10, or 11.
      • With non-subscription Office: Windows 10 or later. If versions are older, update Office and/or Windows using the update mechanisms referenced in the troubleshooting article.
    1. Check for Windows Information Protection (WIP)
    • If the presentation is protected by Windows Information Protection, WebView2 and the Power BI add-in are not supported and the add-in will fail to load.
    • To check:
      • In File Explorer, add the File ownership column. If the file shows Work, it is WIP-protected.
      • For files in SharePoint/OneDrive opened in Microsoft Edge, look for the briefcase icon in the address bar indicating WIP protection.
    • If WIP is applied, save or open an unprotected copy of the presentation (per organizational policy) and try inserting the Power BI add-in there.
    1. Reinsert the live Power BI content Once the add-in is loading correctly:
    • Open the presentation and go to the target slide.
    • Use InsertPower BI (or My Add-insMicrosoft Power BI) to add the add-in.
    • Either:
      • Use the recommended content list in the add-in, or
      • Paste a report/visual URL from Power BI (obtained via Share, Export, or the browser address bar) and select Insert.

If the environment previously worked and nothing changed locally, also confirm with the organization’s admin that there were no recent policy changes (such as enabling WIP or restricting add-ins) that could block the add-in from loading.
