The framework for legally deploying and using Microsoft Exchange Server or Exchange Online, based on server and client access models.
Exchange Online Plan 2 is assigned through licensing, not directly on the mailbox.
To add Exchange Online Plan 2 to an existing email account (user mailbox), the Microsoft 365 admin must:
- Assign or change the user’s license to one that includes Exchange Online Plan 2 (for example, Microsoft 365/Office 365 E3 or E5), or directly assign an Exchange Online Plan 2 standalone license.
- When the new license is applied, the corresponding ExchangeOnlineEnterprise mailbox plan is automatically applied to that mailbox. This mailbox plan controls mailbox properties such as storage and features.
Mailbox plans are templates tied to license types. Changing the user’s license to one that includes Exchange Online Plan 2 is what effectively “adds” Plan 2 to the existing mailbox; the mailbox is then configured according to the ExchangeOnlineEnterprise mailbox plan.
If the mailbox already exists and the license is changed, the settings from the new mailbox plan are applied to that existing mailbox.
