GroupMe - can't upload images

We use GroupMe at work to communicate with our student team. The supervisors have found that we can no longer send images from the web version. We can select the image and type a message, but when we click the action button, nothing happens. We can still send text messages and other attachments. We just can't send photos.

We've always done this in the past. They are not giant photos. Our students are able to send images through the mobile app.

Support was unhelpful. They essentially said "that's how it goes. use the app."

Any ideas as to what to do? Anyone else experiencing this? I've cleared cache/cookies. tried a different browser. Different computer. Different accounts. It's a problem across the board.

The tags only allow "direct messaging" but this is an issue for messaging in any area of GroupMe.

Hi,

Upon checking, GroupMe recently made changes to its web client, which has resulted in the inability to upload and send images through the browser version. While you can still send text messages or attach certain file types, photo uploads are currently disabled on the web. This issue is not related to your account, browser, or computer—it’s a limitation introduced by the service itself. The mobile apps (iOS and Android) and the Windows desktop app continue to support image sharing, so it’s recommended to use those platforms when you need to send pictures. If you must work in the browser, you can share images by uploading them to OneDrive or another cloud service and posting the link in GroupMe until Microsoft restores full functionality.

GroupMe file and photo issues that suddenly affect multiple users and devices are typically caused either by:

    1. The GroupMe app/service version and feature set, or
    2. A browser- or device-side restriction (for example, parental-control or security software).

    From the available information:

    • If sending or receiving files is blocked, updating to the latest GroupMe version is required to ensure access to all current features. For web users, this effectively means verifying that the browser is fully up to date and that GroupMe is not being forced into an older/unsupported mode by extensions or filters.
    • On mobile, photo sending can be blocked by OS permissions (camera/photos access). While this does not directly apply to the web client, it shows that GroupMe’s media upload relies on platform-level permissions and can be silently blocked by external controls.
    • A similar GroupMe sign-in issue on iPhone was ultimately traced to a third-party parental-control app (Aura) that had begun blocking GroupMe behavior after previously working for some time.

    Given that:

    • The issue affects multiple supervisors, browsers, and machines.
    • Students on mobile can still send images.
    • Other attachment types still work.

The most likely causes and actions are:

    1. Check for network or security products that may have recently changed behavior (enterprise web filters, endpoint security, or parental-control/monitoring tools). Temporarily disabling or bypassing these for a test machine or network segment can confirm whether they are blocking GroupMe’s image-upload calls.
    2. Ensure browsers are fully updated and that no privacy or content-blocking extensions are interfering with GroupMe’s media upload endpoints.
    3. If the environment uses any device-management or content-filtering solution (including on staff laptops), review recent policy changes that might treat image uploads differently from other file types.
    4. If no local/network cause is found, treat this as a GroupMe service-side regression for the web client and continue using the mobile app for images while monitoring GroupMe support channels for fixes, as has been the case with other known bugs in Microsoft services.
