I have Microsoft rewards points from spending money on Xbox. Around $50 that I am unable to accept because my phone number is not linked to my account. After speaking to Microsoft support on live chat, I learned that I am unable to link my phone number to my account because of Microsoft's new privacy policies. If that is the case, then how am I supposed to be able to accept the rewards I have earned?

Microsoft Rewards redemptions require a valid, non‑VoIP phone number for SMS or voice verification. If a phone number cannot be added or verified, Rewards points cannot be redeemed.

Key requirements and limitations from the program policies:

    1. A working, non‑VoIP phone number is mandatory for verification when joining and when redeeming points:
      • “We ask for your phone number when you join and, occasionally, when you redeem points for a reward. You'll need a mobile phone or landline number.”
      • “Voice over IP (VoIP) phone numbers are not permitted.”
    2. A single phone number can only be used on a limited number of Rewards accounts:
      • “There is a limitation on the number of accounts (maximum of 6 accounts per household) that can be associated with one phone number. Please provide a different phone number to be able to redeem your Microsoft Rewards points.”
    3. If verification fails repeatedly, there is a cooldown:
      • “If you have had too many unsuccessful attempts at completing phone verification, you must wait 48 hours before attempting again.”
    4. Points also cannot be redeemed if the system detects policy violations (for example VPN/proxy use, VoIP numbers, or region mismatch):
      • “Ensure you are not attempting to redeem Microsoft Reward points while using a VoIP phone number, using a VPN or entering the wrong code, or reached the maximum of allowed usages on a single phone number.”

Given these rules, redemption is only possible if:

    • A valid mobile or landline number can be associated with the account (not VoIP, not over the usage limit), and
    • SMS/voice verification can be completed successfully, and
    • The account is redeeming in the same region where the points were earned and without VPN/proxy.

If current privacy or account settings prevent adding any phone number at all, or if support has confirmed that a number cannot be linked under current policies, then the Rewards system will not allow redemption of those points. In that case, only Microsoft Rewards Support can review the specific account and advise whether any exception or correction is possible.

To proceed, contact Rewards support so the dedicated team can review the account and the phone‑number limitation in detail: use the Microsoft Rewards support channel referenced in the documentation (for example via Microsoft Rewards Customer Support or the general cannot redeem a code and related support flows).
