The subscription is disabled because payments were declined and the account has been flagged (suspicious activity / past-due). Self-service reactivation and normal payment updates are blocked in this state, so the issue must be handled directly by Azure billing/support.
Use these steps to move forward:
- Verify and fix the payment method with the bank
Since the bank declined the Azure charges, confirm with the bank that:- The card has sufficient balance and is not blocked.
- International and recurring transactions are allowed.
- There are no fraud/suspicious-activity blocks on Microsoft/Azure charges.
If needed, ask the bank to remove any block and then try again with that card or another card.
Relevant guidance: declined/blocked cards and insufficient balance are common causes of “Payment is past due. There is a problem with your payment method.”
- Clear any outstanding balance
A disabled subscription often has an overdue bill. Even after updating the payment method, the subscription stays disabled until the past-due balance is fully paid.- Make sure the card used can successfully pay the outstanding amount.
- If the portal lets you add a new card but not delete the old one, pay the outstanding balance first; only then can the old payment method be removed.
- Try updating the payment method in a clean browser session
If the portal is not responding properly when changing the payment method (for example, pages not loading or saving):- Sign out of all Azure sessions.
- Open an InPrivate/Incognito window in Microsoft Edge or another browser.
- Follow the steps in Add, update, or remove a credit card for Azure (from the context) to add a valid card and associate it with the disabled subscription.
- If you see XML or other portal errors, ensure you are signed in with the Account Administrator account for that subscription.
- If the subscription remains disabled after payment
When the invoice shows as paid but the subscription is still disabled, or when the account is flagged for suspicious activity and self-service reactivation is blocked, the only resolution path is Azure Support:- Create a billing support request (billing support is free).
- If the portal keeps redirecting to the “subscription disabled” message, use the direct support creation flow described in the context:
- Go to the support creation blade.
- Select Billing as the issue type and the affected subscription.
- When the portal shows suggested solutions, do not click them; instead, click Return to support request and continue filling out the ticket.
- Clearly state that:
- The subscription is disabled due to suspicious activity.
- Payment was declined but has now been resolved (or a new card is ready).
- The portal will not allow reactivation or normal ticket creation.
A billing engineer can:
- Remove the suspicious-activity flag if appropriate.
- Manually apply payments or move charges if needed.
- Reactivate the subscription or advise on next steps.
- If payment is past due and no email notifications were seen
Ensure the account administrator email address for billing notifications is correct and check spam/junk folders for Azure billing emails. This helps avoid future automatic disables due to unnoticed past-due balances.
If payment has been made and the bank confirms no blocks, but the subscription is still disabled and the portal keeps looping to the same message, resolution requires Azure Support intervention as described above; it cannot be fixed solely from the portal UI.
