To have Copilot show in the ribbon of the desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) with a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, the following conditions must be met and verified.

    1. Confirm the correct account and subscription
      • Copilot in the desktop apps requires:
        • A Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, or Copilot Pro for home users.
      • Ensure the account signed into the desktop apps is the same one that has the Copilot subscription:
        1. Open Word (or Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook).
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Under User Information, verify that the primary account is the one with the Copilot license.
    2. Make sure the desktop apps are fully updated
      • Copilot requires a recent build of Microsoft 365 Apps.
      • On Windows:
        1. Open any Microsoft 365 app.
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. In Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.
        4. Let updates complete, then restart the apps.
      • On Mac, follow the steps in Update Office for Mac automatically.
    3. Refresh the license in the desktop apps
      • On Windows:
        1. Open any Microsoft 365 app.
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Select Update License.
        4. Close all Microsoft 365 apps and reopen them.
      • On Mac:
        1. In any Microsoft 365 app, open the app menu (for example, Word).
        2. Select About <app name>.
        3. Select More Info....
        4. Select Refresh License.
        5. Close all Microsoft 365 apps and reopen them.
    4. Check privacy settings that can block Copilot
      • On Windows:
        1. Open Word (or another app).
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. Under Account Privacy, select Manage Settings.
        4. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
        5. Scroll down and turn on All connected experiences.
      • On Mac:
        1. Open Word.
        2. Go to Word > Preferences > Privacy.
        3. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content.
        4. Scroll down and turn on All connected experiences.
    5. Ensure the correct update channel (business/enterprise only)
      • If using a business/enterprise tenant with Microsoft 365 Apps, Copilot is not available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel.
      • To check the channel on Windows:
        1. Open any Microsoft 365 app.
        2. Go to File > Account.
        3. In Product Information, look for the update channel name.
        4. If it shows Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, Copilot will not appear; the device must be moved to Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel by the admin.
    6. If Copilot still does not appear
      • Verify that all Microsoft 365 Copilot requirements (license, app version, network, privacy) are met as described in the Copilot requirements and troubleshooting guidance.
      • If requirements are met and the button is still missing, follow the troubleshooting steps in How to find and enable missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps and, if needed, contact support from within an Office app.
