i havent been on a console in ages, but recently had interest in getting the series x but not if i had to buy all my games again, i can remember my gamertag, probably a password or 2, the games i played, where i wouldve logged in from, and maybe a few other bits and pieces if anyone is willing to help me try get it back.

ive been trying to contact an agent but everything sends me to self help which is useless for me in my situation not having access to anything related to the account anymore, not even a debit card cause its been that long.

To try to get the old account back and avoid rebuying games, follow the official Microsoft account recovery path and provide as much detail as possible about past usage.

    1. If the username/password no longer work
      • Start with the standard recovery flow: go to Recover your account and enter the email, phone number, or Skype name that might be tied to the gamertag.
      • Follow the steps to receive and enter a security code, then set a new password if prompted.
      • Tips from the guidance:
        • Make sure the email domain is correct (for example, outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com, or country variants like outlook.co.uk).
        • Try any other aliases or phone numbers that might have been on the account.
      • Details: My username and password have stopped working.
    2. If the sign-in helpers don’t work or you don’t have access to old security info
      • Use the Sign-in Helper tool if the password stopped working or the username isn’t recognized: Sign-in Helper tool.
      • If you no longer have access to the security info (old phone/email) and don’t remember the password, use the account recovery form:
    3. How to maximize the chance of recovery (important for an old Xbox account) When filling out the recovery form:
      • Use a device and location previously used with the account (old PC, old console’s network, home/office Wi‑Fi if possible).
      • Provide as many details as possible:
        • Old passwords (even partial guesses are fine; wrong answers don’t count against the request).
        • Xbox usage details: gamertag, approximate creation date, consoles used, and the hardware ID of a console that was used frequently (if still accessible).
        • Games played and any Xbox/Microsoft Store purchases remembered.
        • Any Outlook/Hotmail contacts or exact subject lines if email was used.
      • The more accurate detail provided, the better the chance of the system confirming ownership.
    4. If security info is lost but password is known
      • If the password is still remembered but security codes go to old info:
        • Start sign-in, and when asked to verify identity, choose I don't have any of these.
        • Follow the steps to replace security info. After replacement, there is a 30‑day wait before full access is restored.
        • Details: Troubleshoot Microsoft verification code issues.
    5. If the account truly no longer exists
      • If messages like “We couldn’t find an account with that username” or “The Microsoft account you've entered does not exist” appear:
      • If the account has been inactive for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened. See: I can't sign in to my Microsoft account.
    6. Limits and expectations
      • Account recovery is automated for security reasons; support agents and public forums cannot manually restore or bypass security on accounts.
      • If the recovery form is declined, it can be retried (up to the documented limits), ideally after reviewing the guidance and adding more accurate information.

Following these steps and providing detailed historical information (gamertag, games, locations, old passwords, console hardware ID) gives the best possible chance of getting the old Xbox/Microsoft account back.
