ADD MONEY CHILD

Hello,

I’m trying to add funds to my child’s account, but none of my cards are being accepted. I’ve double-checked all the information, and everything appears to be correct, so I’m not sure why the transactions aren’t going through.

Additionally, each time I attempt to add money, my account gets locked due to what is flagged as “unusual behavior.” I then have to go through multiple security steps to regain access.

Could you please help me resolve this issue?

Thanks,

Catherine

To add money to a child’s Microsoft account and control spending, use Microsoft Family Safety with a family organizer account rather than adding a payment card directly to the child’s account. This avoids repeated card authorizations on the child account and lets the organizer complete payments from a verified adult account.

Use this flow to add funds safely:

    1. Sign in as the family organizer at family.microsoft.com.
    2. Locate the child in the family list.
    3. Select Add money (or Manage spending > Add money if the child already has some balance).
    4. Choose the amount to add and select Next.
    5. On the payment screen, select an existing payment method or Add a way to pay, then complete the purchase.

If cards are still not accepted in this organizer flow, the issue is with payment verification, not the child account itself. In that case:

    1. Make sure the organizer’s payment method is valid and up to date using the account’s payment options page (for example, by following Add a new payment method or Update a payment method from the payment-method articles in the references below).
    2. After updating or adding a payment method successfully, repeat the Add money steps above.

To see the child’s current balance and manage spending rules:

    1. As the family organizer, sign in at family.microsoft.com.
    2. Select the child, then choose Manage spending to view balance and configure spending limits or approval requirements.

If instead a credit card is being added directly to the child’s own Microsoft account and then used for purchases, configure strict approval so that any attempted purchase must be approved from the organizer account:

    1. Sign in to the child’s Microsoft account and add the card under Payment options by choosing Add a new payment method.
    2. Sign out of the child account.
    3. Open the Family Safety app or go to family.microsoft.com and sign in with the organizer account.
    4. Select the child, choose Manage spending, and enable Require approval for every purchase.

This setup keeps purchases under the organizer’s control and reduces repeated failed payment attempts on the child account, which can trigger “unusual behavior” and account locks.
