How to contact Data Protection Team

Opened a ticket on 3/19 for an Admin account that is locked out. How long does it take to get the account unlocked? I am reading in forums up to a week. A Microsoft tech verified the account lock out yesterday and stated he would get back to us that day or the next morning. Haven't heard anything back and there is no way to contact them. If you try to call into the Microsoft support numbers you cant get past the automation to speak with anyone. Then it just hangs up just after telling you to reply all to your ticket email and a note will be added. Sent several emails with request for a manger to contact me and no reply. Is there any other way to contact the Data Protection Team?

I have the same issue caused by a Microsoft technician. I followed her commands and then I was locked out, and now no one is communicating with me not her, not the data protection team, no one!

I've created a secondary, temporary account as a workaround to be able to even communicate with Microsoft because of this MFA loop. It's been 15 hours since an agent was assigned and no one has contacted me. This is outrageous that Microsoft technicians can lock you out because of their lack of training or knowledge and then you've got no recourse to recovering your account and waiting up to a week is just not an option on a business account. This is crazy.

I am having the same issues. account verification needed but even after re setting password still needs certification through the authenticator app the app tells me to use the app to verify too so cant register on the app

tried to trouble shoot but cant access my account dashboard paying for business 365 for the last months with no access had some urgent work had to setup personal too as it seems my profile on business just wont work.

Then try to speak to someone is a no. spent hours and hours in the last days trying to open a case but the call just disconnects at various stages .

This is so annoying and to be honest i am now so disheartened with office 365 and Microsoft customer service is shambles as is on existent i get no talking might be a good business case but sometimes just being to interact is necessary.

Hopefully @Rukmini can help you. I had a ticket open for a week and finally someone contacted me after the reply here. The state of Microsoft's customer service is incredibly disappointing and ineffective.

Update from the original poster — 6 months later

I opened this thread on 24 March 2026 after a locked-out admin account and a tech who promised a same-day or next-morning callback and never returned it. Phone support hung up after telling me to reply-all to the ticket email. Manager requests went unanswered.

What this thread shows since then:

Mar 30 — Murray: locked out by a Microsoft technician’s own instructions. No communication from the tech or Data Protection. 15 hours after an agent was assigned, still nothing.

Apr 29–30 — Rebecca: paying for Business 365 with no access, MFA loop, hours of calls that disconnect, told to open a new Q&A post instead of getting help here.

Jul 7 — Jack: sole Global Admin locked out of Authenticator. Same request to @Rukmini.

Jul 7 — me: ticket sat a week; contact only happened after I posted here. Customer service was disappointing and ineffective then.

Sep 8 — Danny: two days waiting for MFA recovery as a solo business owner / Global Admin.

Sep 15 — Nandy: tenant now has zero Global Administrators (Access Review auto-applied and removed all GA assignments). Domain ownership, DNS TXT, and identity verification completed 9/11. Severity A. Three cases (2609080040008539, 2609100040007599, 2609150040008596). No callback. Over a week with restoration already verified as ready.

The official answers on this forum are still the same: there is no public number for Data Protection, you must go through IVR that many people say hangs up, reply to a ticket that does not get replies, or open yet another Q&A post and tag a moderator.

Six months. Same failure mode. Paying customers, sole admins, and now a tenant with no Global Admins at all still cannot get a callback on Severity A after identity is already verified.

If anyone from Microsoft is reading this: the process as documented here is not working. Callbacks are not happening. IVR is a dead end. “Reply to the ticket email” is not a contact method when nobody reads it.

Adding to this, the same pattern is playing out right now. I have posted multiple threads on this same Severity A case with no reply or resolution from Microsoft, linked below. Nine plus days, verification completed since 9/11, three support cases raised, and still zero Global Administrators on the tenant. For a classification that is supposed to guarantee continuous 24x7 engagement until resolution, this process is genuinely not working, and it is disappointing that public posts are what it takes to get any response at all.

When you call Microsoft support to reset Microsoft MFA or resolve a forgot password for a Microsoft 365 issue, follow these IVR prompts:

Wait out the intro — You may hear a ~30-second automated introduction (e.g., “you can visit the link…”). Ignore it and wait for the menu options.
Press 1 — Select yourself as a business email user
Press 1 again — Choose technical help

Automated IVR Conversation Guide

In some regions, the initial interaction is fully automated. Use these answers to navigate it:

BEWARE. I called what I thought was a Microsoft Support number and now three weeks later and over $1000 I am so hacked NOTHING Microsoft works. Wish I had never heard of MS365. NO REAL Person from Microsoft will even call me back. I no longer trust any phone number

Data Protection cases for tenant admin lockouts are handled only through Microsoft Support; there is no direct phone number or separate contact channel for the Data Protection team.

From the documented and community-supported process:

Open or continue working through a Microsoft Support ticket
- Data Protection is engaged internally by Microsoft once a support engineer confirms the tenant-lockout / sole-admin scenario.
- Follow the guidance in the ticket email: replying to the existing case email thread is the supported way to add notes or request escalation (including asking for a manager or case escalation).
If phone contact is needed, use the global customer service numbers and drive the IVR to a live agent
- Call the appropriate number from Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support.
- Ignore the initial 30-second message suggesting self-service links and wait for menu options.
- When prompted by the IVR, use a path like:
  - Press 1 for business email user.
  - Press 1 again for technical support.
- In automated-dialog countries, answer along these lines:
  - Problem type: say “Authenticator” or “Lost account”.
  - Product: “Office 365 for business”.
  - Education or company: “For companies”.
  - Are you an administrator?: “Yes”.
  - Any other admins?: “No”.
  - Do you need a service request?: “Yes – I need to create a ticket and speak with the Data Protection team.”
- Once connected to a human agent, reference the existing ticket number and explicitly request that the case be routed/expedited with the Data Protection team because the global admin is locked out.
If unable to reach an agent at all, use a temporary trial tenant as a workaround
- Create a new Microsoft 365 trial tenant (any business plan) so that the Microsoft 365 admin center can be accessed.
- In the new tenant’s Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Help & support and open a new support request.
- In that ticket, clearly state that support is needed for a different existing tenant where the global admin is locked out and that the Data Protection team must be engaged for MFA/admin recovery.
- Provide the original tenant’s domain, locked admin UPN, and the existing ticket number so support can associate and escalate correctly.
- After resolution, cancel the trial subscription to avoid charges.
Expected timelines
- Community and moderator guidance indicates these cases can take multiple days; some reports mention up to about a week depending on verification complexity and region.
- There is no documented faster “backdoor” to Data Protection beyond:
  - An active support ticket, plus
  - Phone escalation via customer service, or
  - A second ticket from a trial tenant if normal channels fail.

There is no alternative direct email, portal, or phone queue for the Data Protection team beyond working through Microsoft Support with the above methods.
