The issue is caused by the type of account being used and how Microsoft Family Safety invitations work.
Key points from the scenario:
- A family member can only join a Microsoft family group with a personal Microsoft account (not a school/work account).
- Members can only be in one family group at a time.
- The invite must be accepted while signed in with the same personal Microsoft account that was invited.
Step-by-step checklist:
- Confirm the correct account type for the child
- School email addresses (often Microsoft 365 Education or work accounts) cannot be used as personal Microsoft accounts for Family Safety.
- If the son is signing in with a school account, Family Safety will not recognize it as a valid personal Microsoft account.
- Create or confirm a personal Microsoft account for the child
- If the son does not already have a personal Microsoft account, create one using an email that is allowed for personal accounts (this can be a Microsoft address like outlook.com, or another allowed email). School email addresses cannot be used for this.
- Once created, ensure the son can sign in at https://family.microsoft.com with this personal account.
- Invite the child from a Family organizer account
- Sign in as a Family organizer at family.microsoft.com.
- Select Add a family member.
- Choose role Member (recommended for a child) and select Next.
- Enter the child’s personal Microsoft account email address (not the school email) and select Next.
- The child will receive an email with a link to join the family group.
- Have the child accept the invitation with the correct account
- On the child’s device, open the invitation email and click the link.
- When prompted, sign in using the same personal Microsoft account that was invited.
- If the child is under statutory age, the flow may prompt for adult consent.
- If the child is already in another family group
- A member can only belong to one family group. If the account is already in a different family group, it must leave or be removed before joining yours.
- The child (or organizer of the other group) must follow the steps to leave or be removed from that group before accepting your invitation.
- Alternative: Use the Family Safety app
- In the Microsoft Family Safety mobile app:
- Open the app and sign in as a Family organizer.
- Scroll down and tap Add a family member.
- Enter the child’s personal Microsoft account email address or phone number and tap Next.
- Choose Member and tap Invite to family group.
- The child then accepts the invite as above.
- In the Microsoft Family Safety mobile app:
Once the child has a valid personal Microsoft account and is using that same account to accept the invite, the “email address doesn’t exist” error should no longer appear.
