A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
The screenshot shows error AADSTS5000225: This tenant has been blocked due to inactivity. This means the Microsoft Entra tenant that backs the Azure and Microsoft Foundry access is blocked because it has been inactive beyond the allowed period.
Key points from the documented behavior:
- The tenant is blocked after a long period of inactivity (more than 200 days past the billing cycle).
- When blocked, sign-in to Azure (and any services relying on that tenant) fails with
AADSTS5000225. - Twenty days after the block is applied, the tenant is permanently deleted and can’t be recovered.
Actions to take:
- Check how long the tenant has been inactive. If it has been blocked for less than 20 days, it may still be unblocked.
- If within 20 days, open a support case with Microsoft so support can review and, if possible, unblock the tenant. Use the tenant ID and the error details (error code AADSTS5000225, correlation ID, timestamp) when contacting support.
- If the tenant has been blocked for more than 20 days, the tenant is permanently deleted and cannot be restored. In that case, a new tenant and Azure subscription must be created to continue using Azure or Microsoft Foundry.
If this is tied to an Azure free account that was never fully activated or upgraded, another documented workaround is:
- Open a browser in InPrivate/Incognito mode with all browsing data cleared.
- Go to
https://signup.azure.comand sign in with the same account. - If the sign-up page recognizes an existing free account, follow the prompts to upgrade to a pay-as-you-go account; this can re-enable access when the tenant is still recoverable.
If none of these steps work, contact Microsoft support with the tenant details as soon as possible, because recovery is only possible within the limited window before permanent deletion.
