The most likely reasons for unexpected PC Game Pass or game-related charges are:
- A Microsoft subscription has recurring billing enabled
- A PC Game Pass or other Microsoft subscription may have been started in the past (for example during a trial or promotion) and is now renewing automatically.
- To check this, sign in to the Subscriptions page and review active subscriptions and renewal dates.
- A different Microsoft account or payment method was used
- The charge may be tied to another Microsoft account that uses the same card.
- If the wrong Microsoft account was used, or the charge is not recognized, go to the Manage your payments page of the Microsoft account dashboard and select Investigate next to the charge. This will show what the charge is for and which account it belongs to.
- Someone else used the payment method
- A family member or someone with access to the card may have purchased a subscription or game using that payment method.
- The investigation flow on the Manage your payments page helps identify if a family member made the purchase.
- A previously declined or pending charge was processed
- A charge that was initially declined or pending can later be completed, which may appear as a new or unexpected transaction.
To proceed:
- Go to Manage your payments while signed in with each Microsoft account that might be associated with the card.
- Use Investigate on the unrecognized charge to see details.
- If it is tied to a subscription that is not wanted, go to Subscriptions and turn off recurring billing or cancel it. Note that cancellations must be more than 2 days before the billing date to avoid the next charge.
- If the charge is still not recognized after investigation, contact Microsoft Support via the account portal or work with the bank to report it as unauthorized.
If the charge is for a Microsoft Store game or subscription and is eligible, a refund may be requested following the guidance in the refund documentation.
