Hello, I am paying for a subscription and every month it doesn't work properly. It keeps telling me I owe a bill, after I pay my bill and won't allow me to work in my word documents. On top of that, the copilot is now not working after this last horrible update! Microsoft get it together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want a resolution, solution, and a complimentary paid month for all my troubles! Because of this, I've had to delay the release of my book. This is horrible!

The message that payment is due, even after paying, usually means Microsoft 365 is seeing a billing or subscription-status problem on the account being used in Word.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Confirm the subscription is active
      1. Close all Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
      2. Go to the Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services.
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account that is signed into Word.
      4. Under Microsoft 365, check the status:
        • If it shows Expired or Past due, renew or pay the past-due amount.
        • Use the Pay now or Renew option if shown.
    2. Pay any past-due balance correctly
      1. On the same Services & subscriptions page, locate any past-due subscription.
      2. Select Pay now.
      3. Verify the payment method is valid (not expired or blocked). If needed, update it or add a new one.
      4. Complete the payment flow and confirm it finishes successfully.
    3. Make sure payment information is up to date
      1. Close Office apps again.
      2. Go to the Payment options page: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments.
      3. Sign in with the same Microsoft account.
      4. If the payment method shows an error, update or replace it.
      5. After updating, reopen Word and check if the subscription banner disappears.
    4. If Office still says there is a subscription or billing problem
      • If Word shows a yellow bar such as “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it.”, that is the same payment/billing issue described above. Ensure the subscription is Active and not Suspended, Expired, or Past due on the account page.
      • If the subscription is active and billing is correct but the banner persists, sign out of Office in Word (File → Account → Sign out), then sign back in with the same Microsoft account that has the active subscription.
    5. When payment issues are fixed but editing is still blocked
      • If no billing warning appears but Word shows Unlicensed Product or still won’t allow editing, follow the activation troubleshooting steps in Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office (linked from the subscription notice article in the references). This covers repairing activation so Word recognizes the paid subscription.
    6. About Copilot not working
      • Copilot availability depends on the subscription and account state. If the Microsoft 365 subscription is in past-due, expired, or suspended status, Copilot features can stop working until the subscription is fully active again.
      • After resolving billing and confirming the subscription is active, restart Office apps and Windows to ensure Copilot reconnects to the service.
    7. Getting billing support and discussing compensation
      • Community and documentation cannot grant refunds or complimentary months. For a billing review, refunds, or compensation (such as a complimentary month), contact Microsoft Billing Support directly via the Contact – Microsoft Support path described in the referenced billing and refund articles. A support agent can:
        • Check charges and subscription status.
        • Fix any account-side issues causing repeated “you owe a bill” messages.
        • Review eligibility for refunds or credits based on the impact described.

Until the subscription status is fully active and payment methods are error-free on the Microsoft account pages, Word and Copilot will continue to show billing notices and may block editing.
