A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Follow these steps on the MacBook to upgrade Office, depending on whether it is a one‑time purchase (Office 2019/2021/2024) or a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Confirm and (re)install Office
- Open a browser and go to the Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy or activate Office.
- In the list of products, find the Office or Microsoft 365 license.
- Select Install next to it. This downloads the current installer for Mac.
- Open the downloaded installer package and follow the on‑screen steps to install or reinstall Office on the Mac.
- Make sure Office is on the latest version for macOS
After installation, Office for Mac should update itself, but updates can also be triggered manually:
- Open any Office app on the Mac (for example Word).
- On the menu bar, select Help > Check for Updates.
- Follow the prompts to install any available updates.
- If the Mac is on an older macOS version If the Mac is running an older macOS that cannot install the very latest Office build, the Microsoft 365 or Office license still allows activation of an older Office version that is supported on that macOS. In that case, use the guidance in “Most Recent Office You Can Run – Best Practices” (as referenced in the Q&A answers) to download and install the most recent compatible Office build, then activate it with the existing license.
Once Office is installed and updated, the upgrade prompts should stop, and the latest features available for the subscription or license will be in place.
