Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
Follow these steps in order, based on what has already been tried:
- Check for verification-code delivery issues
- Make sure the verification code is being sent to the correct phone number or email (primary alias or a security email/phone that was previously added as a way to verify sign-in).
- If codes are sent by email, check the junk/spam folder for messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com and mark that sender as trusted.
- If codes are sent by SMS:
- Ensure the phone does not block texts from unknown numbers.
- Confirm the inbox is not full and the messaging app is working.
- Do not use a VOIP number; only a mobile number can receive verification codes.
- Avoid excessive attempts
- Repeated password resets and code requests can cause a temporary block where Microsoft stops sending codes or shows messages like “Try another verification method.”
- Stop trying repeatedly for a while. If there is a temporary block or heavy compromised traffic from the region, it usually clears automatically after some time. Waiting 24 hours (and up to a week in persistent cases) without repeated attempts can help.
- Try different sign-in methods and networks
- If one verification method is blocked, try another method already on the account (for example, switch from SMS to an alternate email, or vice versa).
- Try signing in or resetting the password using:
- A different browser.
- InPrivate/Incognito mode.
- A different network (switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or try another Wi‑Fi network).
- Use the Microsoft sign-in helper
- For sign-in issues (password not recognized, codes not arriving, or account possibly blocked), run the sign-in helper tool to identify the exact problem and see available support options:
- Use the Sign-in helper: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2300860
- If still unable to sign in or receive codes
- If verification codes still do not arrive and no method works, it may be necessary to wait until access to the registered phone/email is possible or until any security block clears.
- If the account is locked or flagged for unusual activity, verification messages may not go through until that security state is resolved automatically.
- For additional technical help (not for sending codes or changing account details), contact support:
- Go to Contact Microsoft Support: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2300955, describe the problem, select Get Help, then choose Contact Support if more assistance is needed.
Note: Support agents cannot send verification codes, password reset links, or directly change account details for security reasons. Recovery must go through the automated sign-in and verification flows.
