I signed into my microsoft account and noticed an HP computer listed in Devices that is not mine. I deleted it and since that action my emails are not showing up. Also, the old emails that were located in the inbox are not there. Is there anything I can do to retrieve my emails?

Deleting a device from the Microsoft account Devices list does not delete Outlook.com email, so the messages are likely hidden, moved, or deleted rather than removed by that action. Use the following checks in Outlook.com (web or apps) to try to restore visibility of the emails:

  1. Check Junk Email
  • Go to the Junk Email folder and look for recent and older messages.
  • If legitimate messages are there, select them and choose Not junk > Not junk to move them back to Inbox.
  • Note: Messages are automatically removed from Junk after 30 days and are not recoverable.
  1. Check Focused/Other tabs
  • If Focused Inbox is enabled, select the Other tab and look for the missing messages.
  • If messages are there, select a message and choose Move to > Move to Focused inbox so future messages from that sender go to Focused.
  1. Check filters on the message list
  • At the top of the message list, select Filter.
  • Make sure All is selected (not Unread, To me, etc.) so all messages are shown.
  1. Check Inbox rules and Sweep rules
  • Go to Rules settings and review all Inbox and Sweep rules.
  • Look for any rule that moves or deletes messages (for example, moves everything to another folder or RSS feeds).
  • Edit or delete incorrect rules.
  1. Check Archive and other folders
  • Open the Archive folder and look for the missing emails.
  • If found, select the messages and choose Move to > Inbox.
  1. Check Deleted Items and recoverable items
  • Open the Deleted Items folder and look for the missing messages.
  • If found, select them and choose Restore.
  • If not visible there, in Deleted Items select Recover items deleted from this folder (on a computer, not mobile apps) and restore any messages that appear.
  • Messages removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for 30 days, and messages deleted from a child’s account cannot be recovered.
  1. Check for account compromise
  • Because an unknown HP device appeared on the account, verify that no one else accessed the mailbox and deleted or moved mail:
    • Go to the Recent activity page to review sign-ins and activity for the last 30 days.
    • Follow the guidance in What is the Recent activity page? to secure a potentially compromised account.
  1. If emails still do not appear
  • Use Outlook.com in a different browser or disable problematic Firefox add-ons if using Firefox, as some add-ons can prevent the inbox from loading correctly.
  • If messages are still missing and not recoverable via Deleted Items or Recover items, they are likely permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
  • For additional help, in Outlook.com select Help on the menu bar, run through self-help, then under Still need help? choose Yes to contact support.
