How to enable searching/recognition of handwritten notes on onenote iPad?

Hello,

I am recently bought a new ipad air (2026, M4) and am writing handwritten notes on onenote, but one note cannot recognise any handwritten words when I search. I also tried searching the words I wrote on my iPad using a windows PC ( I heard the ORC is better on windows) but it still does not recognize the handwritten words. This feature worked when I was writing with a surface pro, but it is not working on my iPad. However I have seen people on youtube getting it to work. I have tried lasso-ing the ink -> right click -> treat ink as handwritting and it does work, but I do not want to lasso tool every single word as it will become a big hassle.

I want to keep my notes as handwriting (I do not want to convert it to text).

I am wondering if there is a way to fix this so I can search up handwritten notes written from my iPad. Or if there is a way to automatically make all ink be treated as hand writing?

    I understand your goal is to keep your notes as raw handwriting while still being able to search them. However, based on the current design of OneNote for iPad, handwritten ink is not automatically indexed for search as it is on Windows or Surface devices.

    Currently, the system requires a manual trigger such as using the Lasso tool to "Treat ink as handwriting" or converting it to text for the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine to recognize the words. I understand that this is a significant hassle for a large volume of notes.

    Since this is a platform design rather than a technical error, I highly recommend sharing your experience directly with our product team. Your feedback is crucial in helping us prioritize this feature for future updates:

    Thanks for the question. On OneNote for iPad, the ability to search handwritten notes depends on ink recognition (OCR), but unfortunately, it doesn’t work as seamlessly as it does on Windows or Surface devices. Here’s the situation based on what you’re seeing:

    • Handwriting search limitations on iPad: OneNote for iOS doesn’t automatically index handwritten ink for search the way the Windows desktop app does. That’s why your handwritten notes aren’t being recognized when you search, even though the same notes worked fine on your Surface Pro.
    • Workaround with “Treat Ink as Handwriting”: As you discovered, lassoing the ink and marking it as handwriting allows search to work—but it’s manual and impractical for large notes.
    • Cross-device search: Even if you sync your iPad notes to OneNote on Windows, the OCR engine often fails to recognize handwriting created on iPad. This is a known limitation.
    • Why YouTube demos look different: Some videos show handwriting search working, but usually those are either on Windows devices or using converted text rather than raw ink.

    At present, OneNote for iPad does not support automatic recognition and search of handwritten ink. The only options are:

    • Convert handwriting to text.
    • Manually mark ink as handwriting.
    • Use OneNote on Windows/Surface for better OCR support.

    Microsoft hasn’t yet enabled full handwriting search on iPad, so it’s not something you can “fix” with a setting—it’s a platform limitation rather than a bug. I am not aware of any roadmap update announcement to bring full handwriting search to OneNote but hopefully they have something when the demand and timing is right.
