Locked Xbox account

Account access and game ownership are tied to the Microsoft account used on Xbox. Without the password and without access to the email or other security info on that Microsoft account, recovery is only possible through the official Microsoft account recovery process.

Follow these steps:

1. Try standard password reset
   • Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page.
   • On the password screen, select “Forgotten your password?”.
   • Enter the Microsoft account email (the one used on Xbox) and select Next.
   • If any verification option (email, phone, etc.) is still available to you, choose it and complete the code verification to reset the password.

2. If no verification options work or you no longer have access to them
   • On the reset flow, if you don’t see any usable option to receive a code, use the sign-in helper tool mentioned in the article.
   • If that still doesn’t work, use the Microsoft Account Recovery form (ACSR) at https://account.live.com/acsr (from context) to prove ownership:
     • Enter the locked Microsoft account email.
     • Provide an alternate email where Microsoft can contact you.
     • Fill in as many accurate details as possible (old passwords, approximate creation date, services used, etc.).

3. If the account is locked or rate-limited
   • If you see messages about too many attempts or usage limits for security codes or forms, wait at least 24 hours without trying again, then retry from a familiar device and network.
   • For locked accounts where Next does not appear when signing in, follow the aka.ms link shown on the lock screen as described in Microsoft account has been locked.
4. If recovery fails
   • Account recovery is automated. If the recovery form repeatedly fails and Microsoft cannot verify ownership, support agents and forum moderators cannot manually unlock or move the Xbox purchases to another account.
   • In that case, the games tied to that Microsoft/Xbox account cannot be transferred.

There is no supported way to get the Xbox account or its games back without either:

• Successfully resetting the password using an existing security option, or
• Successfully passing the Microsoft account recovery process.
