A free app and service that helps families create healthy digital habits and stay connected. It’s designed to support both online safety and real-world awareness by offering tools for screen time management, content filtering, and location sharing
Use the supported Family Safety paths instead of disabling services and scheduled tasks, as those do not fully remove Family Safety integration and can leave it in a broken state.
Try the following sequence:
- Confirm the account is no longer treated as a child
- If the account is still flagged as a child (for example, due to date of birth), Family Safety policies can continue to apply even after leaving a family.
- If the account is an adult but has the wrong birth date, follow the guidance under "I'm an adult not a child" in How to change a birth date on a Microsoft account and use the section I'm an adult, but Microsoft thinks I'm a child.
- Make sure the account is not in any Microsoft family group
- Sign in at family.microsoft.com.
- If the account still appears in a family group, remove it using the documented steps:
- If the account is an organizer and cannot remove others, first remove consent for any child accounts, then remove them from the family group.
- If the account is a member, follow the “My children are adults now” / “Learn how” instructions to leave or be removed from the family group.
- Re‑establish and then cleanly remove Family Safety (if needed)
- Because services and tasks were manually deleted, Family Safety may be in a partially configured state.
- Recreate a clean configuration:
- Rejoin or create a family group at family.microsoft.com.
- Ensure the account is correctly recognized as an adult.
- Then use only the documented UI to:
- Remove any limits and blocks (screen time, content restrictions) from the account.
- Remove the account from the family group or disband the group.
- If the issue persists on specific devices
- On Xbox: verify that the account is not being treated as a child when signed in. Make sure each user signs in with their own profile and PIN so no one is inheriting restrictions from a younger profile. Also check that Signed-out content restrictions are not causing unexpected behavior.
- On Windows/other devices: ensure the account is not configured as a child in any remaining family group and that no Family Safety app is still enforcing policies.
- Collect logs and contact support
- If the Family Safety mobile app is installed and the errors appear there, open the app and send logs:
- Tap the home icon > Help & Feedback > Send logs.
- If the problem continues after confirming the account is an adult and not in any family group, use Contact support from the Family Safety troubleshooting page so support can review the trace IDs and clean up any backend configuration issues.
- If the Family Safety mobile app is installed and the errors appear there, open the app and send logs:
This approach uses only supported mechanisms (account age, family group membership, and official Family Safety controls) and avoids further corruption from manual removal of services/tasks.
