A PC equipped with advanced AI capabilities and Windows Copilot integration
Copilot being blocked is usually caused by one of these conditions:
- Copilot is blocked by Microsoft Family Safety
- If part of a Microsoft family group, the family organizer can block Copilot as an app and block the copilot.microsoft.com site.
- To unblock on the web (family organizer only):
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com and sign in.
- Select the family member’s tile.
- Under Windows → Apps and games, find Copilot and select Unblock app.
- Under the Edge tab, remove copilot.microsoft.com from Blocked sites.
- To unblock on Android/iOS (family organizer only) using the Microsoft Family Safety app:
- Open Microsoft Family Safety.
- Select the family member.
- Under Apps and games, tap Copilot and choose Unblock app.
- Under Web and search → Content filters, remove copilot.microsoft.com from Blocked sites.
- Copilot is blocked or missing in Microsoft 365 apps
- Copilot can be missing, disabled, or appear grayed out if:
- The account does not have a supported Copilot license.
- There are licensing/account conflicts (for example, signed in with both personal and work/school accounts).
- Network requirements for Copilot are not met.
- The device uses unsupported licensing (device-based licensing or Shared Computer Activation).
- The update channel is Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel instead of Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel.
- Privacy settings block connected experiences.
- To fix this in Microsoft 365 apps:
- Follow the steps in How to find and enable missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps to surface/enable the Copilot button.
- If the issue persists, a Microsoft 365 admin must:
- Confirm a license that supports Microsoft 365 Copilot is assigned.
- Ensure Copilot is not blocked by organizational policies.
- Copilot can be missing, disabled, or appear grayed out if:
- Copilot license validation errors
- If seeing messages like “We encountered a problem validating your Copilot license” or similar:
- Make sure the signed-in account actually has a Copilot license.
- If working on an organizational file, sign in with the work/school account that has Copilot.
- If the file is stored in a third‑party storage location, move or copy it to OneDrive or SharePoint and then try Copilot again.
- If seeing messages like “We encountered a problem validating your Copilot license” or similar:
If Copilot is still blocked after checking Family Safety, licensing, and storage location, the next step is to contact the Microsoft 365 admin (for work/school) or Microsoft support (for consumer accounts) with the exact error text being shown.
