Startups: Companies that are in their initial stages of business and typically developing a business model and seeking financing.
Use the following checks and steps, based only on supported Azure sign-up behavior:
- Verify card type and eligibility
- Virtual or prepaid cards are not accepted for Azure subscriptions. If any of the four cards are virtual or prepaid, they will always fail.
- The card must be valid for the country/region selected in the About you step. If the card is issued in a different country/region than the one selected, it can be rejected.
- Check country/region and billing address
- In step 1 (About you), ensure the country/region matches the country/region of the card issuer.
- The billing address entered for the card must match the address on file with the bank (street, city, postal code, etc.).
- If the billing address format is sensitive (for example, postal code with/without spaces), try both variants as suggested in the Microsoft account payment method guidance.
- Validate card details exactly
- Confirm the following match the card and bank records exactly:
- Card number
- Expiration date
- Name on card
- CVV/CVC code
- Any mismatch can cause the generic “check details or try another card” error.
- Confirm the following match the card and bank records exactly:
- Confirm the card is active and allowed for online/international payments
- Contact the bank/card issuer to confirm:
- The card is active and not blocked.
- Online payments are allowed.
- International transactions (if applicable) are allowed.
- Ask the bank if they see declined authorization attempts from Microsoft/Azure and why they are being declined.
- Contact the bank/card issuer to confirm:
- Try a different browser/session
- Complete sign-up in a different browser or an InPrivate/Incognito window, as recommended for Azure sign-up issues.
- Clear cookies/site data for Azure/Microsoft sites and sign in again, then retry the sign-up.
- If the card is still declined
- Review the declined-card causes:
- Card not accepted for the selected country/region.
- Prepaid/virtual card.
- Inaccurate or incomplete credit information.
- Inactive or blocked card.
- If representing a business and card payment is not possible, consider invoice (wire transfer) payment after the account is created, as described in the declined-card article.
- Review the declined-card causes:
- If none of the above resolves it
- There may be an account or sign-up flag that only support can see. Create a billing/support request from the Azure portal (or via the Azure support link) so the billing team can review the sign-up and payment attempts.
