To al0l,

Studently I am not able to get Outlook classic to retrieve my gmail. Its been working for over a year and now has stopped. I have tried to reinstall and quick fix outlook client but it didnt fix the issue.

Strangely after reinstalling the outlook client ... when starting the client...it points to a microsoft exchange profile...i dont have an exchange server or email address.

can anyone help me please?

Follow these steps to get Gmail working again in classic Outlook and avoid the unwanted Exchange profile.

    1. Verify Outlook build and Gmail IMAP
    • Make sure classic Outlook is updated to a build that includes the Gmail fixes (for example Current Channel Version 2404 or later as listed in the Gmail sign‑in article).
    • In Gmail (via browser), confirm IMAP is enabled if that setting still appears for the account. Google is removing this control for some users, but if present it must be on. See Google’s guidance in Add Gmail to another email client.
    1. Fix the Gmail sign‑in/IMAP issue If Outlook shows errors like not being able to log on to the IMAP server or set up the Google account:
    • When prompted in the browser during Gmail sign‑in from Outlook, ensure the permission is checked for:
      • “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.” under Microsoft apps & services can access.
    • If the permission was previously missed, and Outlook is on Current Channel Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later, use the Retry link on the Outlook error window to repeat the browser sign‑in and grant that permission.

If Gmail still does not work, use the manual workaround:

    1. Remove Microsoft apps & services access in Google
    2. Close Outlook.
    3. Sign in to the Google account in a browser.
    4. Select the profile picture → Manage your Google Account.
    5. Go to Security.
    6. Under Your connections to third-party apps & services, select Microsoft apps & services.
    7. Under Microsoft apps & services has some access to your Google Account, select See Details.
    8. Under Access you've given to Microsoft apps & services, select Remove all access.
    9. Confirm.
    10. Remove old Google IMAP credentials from Windows
    11. Open Credential Manager from the Start menu (or via Control Panel on Windows 10).
    12. Select Windows Credentials.
    13. Under Generic Credentials, find entries starting with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2.
    14. Expand each and hover over the name until tp_google_imap_Oauth2 appears; these are the Gmail credentials.
    15. Remove each credential with MicrosoftOffice16_Data:OAUTH2 (two per Gmail account).
    16. Re‑add Gmail to classic Outlook
    17. Open Outlook and add the Gmail account again.
    18. When the browser window opens for Google sign‑in, complete sign‑in and ensure the Gmail permission for Microsoft apps & services (read/compose/send/delete) is checked.
    19. Finish setup and let Outlook sync.
    20. Address the unexpected Exchange profile If Outlook is starting with a Microsoft Exchange profile that is not wanted:
    21. Close Outlook.
    22. Open Control Panel → Mail → Show Profiles….
    23. Remove any unwanted Exchange or Outlook.com profiles.
    24. Create a new profile and add only the Gmail account(s) using the steps above.
    25. Set Always use this profile to the new profile.

If classic Outlook never prompts for a password when adding IMAP accounts, ensure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked on the IMAP details page, or create the account via Control Panel → Mail → Email Accounts… → New and follow the automatic setup.
