In Sway, content is added by inserting “cards,” not via a traditional ribbon button. When using a screen reader or keyboard, inserting content is done through the Insert Content control in the Storyline, not a separate “Insert” button on a toolbar.
To insert content (a new card) when the usual insert control seems unavailable or “greyed out,” use the keyboard sequence that directly targets the Insert Content button:
- In the Sway Storyline, press and hold Caps Lock (screen reader modifier key).
- While holding Caps Lock, press the arrow keys until the screen reader announces:
Insert Content, button.
- Press Spacebar. The screen reader announces:
Selected. Show Suggested card types tab item.
- Still holding Caps Lock, use the arrow keys to move through the tabs (Suggested, Text, Media, Group). The screen reader will announce each tab, for example:
Not selected. Show Text card types tab item.
- Press Spacebar (or Enter) on the tab that matches what needs to be inserted (e.g., Text, Media). A chime confirms the tab switch.
- With the tab selected, hold Caps Lock and press the arrow keys until the screen reader announces an insertable card, for example:
Insert Heading 1 card. Button.
- Press Spacebar (or Enter) to insert that card. The new card is added under the previous card in the Storyline.
Sway saves automatically, so once the card is inserted and edited, no extra save action is required.
