Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Follow these steps and checks in classic Outlook on Windows 11 for the failing AOL POP account:
- Confirm use of the correct AOL app password
- AOL requires an app password, not the normal AOL account password, for Outlook POP/IMAP.
- Generate a fresh app password from AOL following their guidance in Create and manage 3rd-party app passwords and use that exact value in Outlook for the failing account only.
- Do not reuse a Microsoft app password or a password generated for another service; it must be the AOL-specific app password.
- Recreate the account in classic Outlook using manual POP setup
- In classic Outlook, select File > Add Account.
- Enter the AOL email address.
- Select Advanced options, check Let me set up my account manually, then select Connect.
- Choose POP (not IMAP, Exchange, or Outlook.com).
- On the Account settings screen, enter the AOL POP/SMTP server names, ports, and SSL options exactly as AOL specifies. If needed, use the POP/IMAP reference in POP and IMAP account settings as a pattern and verify against AOL’s documentation.
- Select Next, then when prompted for the password, paste the newly generated AOL app password.
- Select Connect and complete setup.
- If automatic or manual setup fails with correct settings
- Classic Outlook setup can fail even when the password is correct if an app password is required but not accepted. In that case, follow the guidance under Automatic setup failed when adding account in classic Outlook:
- Ensure the account is being added as POP or IMAP via Advanced options > Let me set up my account manually.
- If setup fails, choose Change Account Settings and re-verify all server details against AOL’s values or the POP and IMAP server name reference, then choose Connect again.
- Check for SPA (Secure Password Authentication) being incorrectly enabled
- For non-Microsoft IMAP/POP accounts (Gmail, AOL, etc.), classic Outlook should not use SPA.
- When editing the account settings, ensure Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked on the IMAP/POP details page as described under Classic Outlook never asks me for a password.
- Verify and correct settings via Mail in Control Panel If the account appears in Outlook but still prompts for a password or fails to connect:
- Open Control Panel in Windows.
- Open Mail.
- Select Email Accounts….
- Select the problematic AOL account and choose Change.
- On Change Account, verify:
- Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server match AOL’s POP/SMTP values.
- User Name is the full AOL email address.
- Password is the AOL app password (not the standard AOL password).
- Select More Settings > Advanced and confirm ports and encryption match AOL’s requirements.
- If AOL uses two-factor authentication, ensure the app password is used as the account password, as noted in Change or update email account settings in Outlook for Windows.
- Consider update-related POP issues
- There is a known issue where classic Outlook POP profiles can hang or misbehave after specific Windows 11 updates. If the failing AOL account is configured as POP and Outlook is freezing, hanging, or not saving changes, this may be related to the Windows 11 update described in Classic Outlook POP account profiles hang and freeze after Windows 11 update to KB5074109.
- The temporary fix in that scenario is to remove the problematic Windows update (KB5074109). If uninstall is blocked, follow the alternative methods described in the referenced thread.
- Cross-check against the working AOL account
- In Control Panel > Mail > Email Accounts…, compare every setting of the working AOL POP account with the failing one:
- Server names
- Ports and encryption
- SPA disabled
- Username format
- The only intentional difference should be the app password (each account should have its own AOL app password).
If all of the above are correct and the problem persists only for one AOL POP mailbox, remove that account from the profile again, confirm no stale entries remain in Email Accounts…, then re-add it using a freshly generated AOL app password and manual POP setup.
