A tool for managing user identities, credentials, and access across on-premises and cloud environments
The account is still using the old email as security info/alias for verification. The new address showing on the “about” page does not automatically replace the old one everywhere; it must be added and promoted in the Microsoft account security settings, and the old one removed only after that.
Follow these steps to fix it:
- Add the new email as a sign-in alias
- Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=842796
- Sign in with the existing account credentials.
- Under Account aliases, choose Add email.
- Add the @myctl.net address and complete the verification process (a verification email will be sent there). If a Verify button appears next to it later, select Verify and then Send email as described in the verification article.
- Make the new email the primary alias
- On the same Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page, under Account aliases, select Make primary next to the @myctl.net address.
- This makes it the main address used for sign-in and for receiving verification codes.
- Remove or update old verification methods
- Go to the Security info page via My Account: https://myaccount.microsoft.com → Security info.
- If the old @q.com address is listed as an email method, select Delete next to it.
- Important: if this is removed by mistake, it must be added again from scratch; there is no undo.
- Add the @myctl.net address as a security method if it is not already listed:
- Select Add method → choose Email → enter the @myctl.net address (must not be a work or school email) → enter the code sent to that address.
- Ensure verification emails go to the new address
- Verification codes for sign-in can only be sent to the primary alias or another email added as a verification method. Once @myctl.net is primary and added as security info, prompts to verify should use that address instead of the inaccessible @q.com.
If, during sign-in, only the old address is shown and cannot be accessed, choose I don't have any of these when prompted for a verification method and follow the guided recovery process to update backup security info.
