Using New Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Follow these steps to get the Gmail account working again in classic Outlook.
- Confirm Outlook is on a fixed build
- For classic Outlook issues with Gmail and error 0x800CCC0E, there is a known problem that has been fixed in recent builds.
- In Outlook, go to File > Office Account > About Outlook and confirm the version/build is at or newer than the fixed builds mentioned in the articles (for example, Current Channel Version 2404 Build 17531.10000 or later for Gmail sign-in fixes, and Version 2412 Build 18324.20168 or later for the “Retry” Gmail consent fix).
- If not current, choose Update Options > Update Now on the Office Account page, let Office update, then restart Outlook.
- Re-add the Gmail account using the new sign-in flow
- In classic Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings… > Email > New.
- Choose Google (or IMAP/POP if prompted) and enter the Gmail address.
- A browser window should open for Google sign-in (this is part of the fix for “browser or app may not be secure” and IMAP setup errors).
- Sign in with the Gmail credentials.
- When prompted with Microsoft apps & services can access, make sure the permission “Read, compose, send, and permanently delete all your email from Gmail.” is checked, then select Allow.
- If the account was added previously without that box checked and Outlook shows an error, use the Retry link in the error window to repeat the browser sign-in and this time check that permission.
- Ensure IMAP is enabled in Gmail If Outlook still cannot connect and shows 0x800CCC0E or “We weren’t able to set up your Google account with IMAP”:
- In a browser, sign in to Gmail.
- Open Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Under IMAP access, select Enable IMAP.
- Select Save Changes.
- Verify server settings if adding manually If Outlook asks for manual settings, use:
- Incoming (IMAP): imap.gmail.com, SSL required, Port 993
- Outgoing (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com, SSL or TLS required, Authentication required
- Port 465 for SSL, or 587 for TLS/STARTTLS
- User name: full Gmail address
- Password: Gmail password (or app password if using that method)
- If still stuck in a loop
- Remove the partially added Gmail profile from File > Account Settings > Account Settings….
- Close Outlook, reopen it, and repeat steps 2–4.
If these steps are followed (updated Outlook, IMAP enabled, correct consent granted, and correct IMAP/SMTP settings), the Gmail account should add successfully and mail should sync again.
