To stop Copilot from interfering and effectively disable it, use the options that match where Copilot is showing up and how the account is used.

1. If Copilot is appearing in Outlook (Microsoft 365 Copilot app / Copilot Chat)

• An administrator can block the Copilot app tenant-wide so users cannot access Copilot Chat on the web, in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, or in Outlook:
  1. Go to Microsoft 365 admin center → Integrated Apps.
  2. Select Copilot.
  3. Choose either:
     • Specific users/group in the organization can install and remove the affected users/groups, or
     • Block the app for everyone so no one can install/use it.
• This removes access to Copilot Chat in Outlook and the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for those users.

2. If Copilot is appearing in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote on desktop

• Use the Enable Copilot checkbox per app and per device:
  1. Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote on a supported version.
  2. Go to the app’s Copilot settings page.
  3. Clear the Enable Copilot checkbox.
• This turns off Copilot in that specific app on that specific device. Repeat for each app and device where Copilot should be disabled.

3. If Copilot icons still appear in Word on Mac after disabling

• On Mac, Copilot can be disabled but the button may remain dimmed:
  1. In Word, go to Word → Preferences.
  2. In Authoring & Proofing Tools, select Copilot.
  3. Clear Enable Copilot.
• The Copilot tool will be inactive even if the icon is still visible.

4. If Copilot is installed as a separate app on Windows

• Remove the Microsoft Copilot app (consumer experience) from Windows:
  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Copilot.
  3. Select the three dots (…) and choose Uninstall.
• For managed/enterprise devices, IT admins can prevent or remove the app using AppLocker policy with a rule that blocks the package name MICROSOFT.COPILOT.

5. If Copilot access needs to be blocked at home (for personal accounts)

• Use parental or device controls to block Copilot entirely:
  • Use Microsoft Family Safety to block the Copilot app on Windows, Xbox, or Android, or to block the domain copilot.microsoft.com in supported browsers.
  • On Apple devices, use Screen Time to block the Copilot app.
  • Many home routers can block the domain copilot.microsoft.com to prevent access from any device on the home network.

If email access is being blocked or interrupted by Copilot UI in Outlook, combining step 1 (admin blocking the Copilot app) with uninstalling any standalone Copilot app on Windows (step 4) will remove Copilot-related experiences that might interfere with normal mail usage.
