Blocked website in family safety showing as “this site is now allowed”

Hey all,

I set up family safety for my child and have the “only use allowed websites” as well as blocking access to the Microsoft store website (so that now other browsers can be installed).

however, after adding the site to the blocked list, it is showing up as “this site is now allowed”.

app.microsoft.com is only on the blocked list, and is NOT on the allowed list.

is there a way to fix this? To prevent Microsoft store apps from being installed via the website?

thank you!

Microsoft Family Safety web filters only control what can be accessed in Microsoft Edge; they do not directly prevent app installation from the Microsoft Store service itself.

To reduce the chance of installing Microsoft Store apps via the web:

    1. Ensure web filtering is correctly configured for the child:
      • Go to family.microsoft.com and sign in as the family organizer.
      • Select the child, then Content filters > Web and search.
      • Turn on Filter inappropriate websites / Filter inappropriate websites and searches.
      • Turn on Only allow these websites / Only use allowed websites so only explicitly allowed URLs can be opened.
      • Add only the specific sites that should be allowed under Allowed sites and do not add the Microsoft Store web URLs there.
    2. If a site shows “this site is now allowed” after being added to a block list, verify that it is not also present in any Always allowed / Allowed sites list for that child. If it is, remove it from the allowed list and keep it only in Always blocked / Blocked sites.
    3. Use app and game filters to control Store apps themselves:
      • In the Family Safety app, select the child > Content filters > Apps and games.
      • Set Allow apps and games rated to the appropriate age so that apps above that rating require approval.
      • Add any specific Store apps that should never be used to the Never allowed list.
    4. Remember that Family Safety web and search filters only work when the child is:
      • Using Microsoft Edge, and
      • Signed in with the child’s Microsoft account in Edge.

If the Microsoft Store website still appears as allowed even when listed as blocked, rely on the combination of:

    • Only use allowed websites (so the child cannot browse freely to new domains), and
    • Apps and games restrictions (so Store apps cannot be installed or used without approval),

rather than expecting the web block alone to fully prevent Store-based installs.
