Help Accessing Main Account

My main Microsoft account was accessed in South Africa and now I am locked out of it.
Unfortunately, the secondary email tired to that account is an old email from college that I have since lost access to. Furthermore, I can't seem to answer all of the questions correctly on the account recovery form because I am not sure what of the three of my favorite foods I might have entered as the answer or which of the two or three zip codes I lived in at the time I would have entered when I made the account.
Any ideas on what I can do to regain access to this account? My main concern is losing access to my 15+ year old Xbox account.

Thank you!

To regain access to the main Microsoft account and protect the long‑standing Xbox profile, only the official self‑service recovery and security flows can be used. Human support cannot bypass these systems or manually verify identity for consumer accounts.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Use the Sign‑in Helper first
If the password is known but sign‑in fails, or if the username is not being recognized, start with the Sign‑in Helper tool referenced in the guidance:
      • For sign‑in issues where the password stopped working, use the Sign-in Helper tool as described under I can't sign in to my Microsoft account.
    2. If locked or blocked, wait out any lockout and avoid repeated attempts
Multiple failed sign‑in or recovery attempts can trigger temporary lockouts and rate limits on password resets and verification codes. When that happens, the recommendation is:
      • Stop trying additional resets or recovery submissions.
      • Wait the full lockout period (typically about 24 hours) before trying again, as repeated attempts can restart the cooldown.
    3. Use the Microsoft account recovery form (ACSR) carefully
When normal reset options (old secondary email, phone, etc.) are not available, the account recovery form is the primary path:
      • Read the guidance in Help with the Microsoft account recovery form before submitting.
      • Then use the Account recovery form link provided there.
      • Complete it from a device and location that have been used regularly with this account (home PC, usual network). This increases the chance automated checks recognize the sign‑in context.
    4. Provide as much accurate historical detail as possible
The form does not require every answer to be perfect; wrong answers do not count against the request. Focus on what can be recalled reliably:
      • Old passwords ever used on this account (check saved passwords in browsers if needed).
      • Email addresses of frequent contacts and exact subject lines of messages sent from this account (for Outlook/Hotmail use).
      • Any Microsoft services used with this account (Outlook.com, Xbox, Skype, etc.).
      • For Xbox use, provide details such as the console(s) commonly used and any other service‑related information requested.
If unsure about security questions like “favorite foods” or past ZIP codes, make the best good‑faith guess; the guidance explicitly notes that guessing is acceptable and incorrect answers are not penalized.
    5. If security info is lost and the password is known
If the password is still known but all security info (old email, phone) is inaccessible:
      • Start sign‑in, and at the Verify your identity prompt choose I don't have any of these.
      • Follow the steps to replace security info.
      • After replacement, there is a mandatory 30‑day waiting period before full sign‑in is allowed. During those 30 days, if the old security info is recovered, it can still be used to sign in, which cancels the pending change.
    6. If both password and security info are unavailable
When the password is forgotten and no security info can be used, the only route is:
      • Carefully review Help with the Microsoft account recovery form.
      • Submit a request via the Recover account link referenced under verification code troubleshooting.
      • Wait for the review (response is typically within 24 hours). If denied, adjust answers based on the guidance and resubmit, respecting any daily submission limits.
    7. If the account was accessed from another country (possible compromise)
Because there was sign‑in from South Africa and the account is now locked, it is treated as suspicious activity:
      • Use the same recovery form and sign‑in helper flows above; there is no separate manual override for compromised accounts.
      • Once access is regained, immediately review security info, recent activity, and change the password to a strong, unique one, then enable two‑step verification if possible.
    8. About the Xbox profile tied to the account
The Xbox profile is bound to the Microsoft account identity. To keep the 15+ year Xbox history, the original Microsoft account must be recovered; it cannot be detached and moved by support if the account itself cannot be verified. This makes successfully completing the account recovery form from a familiar device and location, with as much accurate historical data as possible, critical.

If all recovery options, including the account recovery form, fail after careful, detailed attempts, there is no additional documented method to regain access or to transfer the Xbox profile to a new account.
