17/5000 How to modify the software name of an application that has already been listed on the app store

To change the name of an app that is already published in Microsoft Store via Partner Center, the existing name cannot be edited directly. Instead, reserve a new name and then submit an update that uses this new name.

Follow these steps (MSIX/MSI/PWA and Marketplace solutions work similarly):

1. Reserve the new app name
   In Partner Center, go to Product management → Manage app name reservations and reserve the new name that should replace the old one.
2. Update the app package to use the new name
   Update the app’s package/manifest so that the app name inside the package matches the newly reserved name. This is required to avoid name/identity errors during submission.
3. Create a new submission using the new name
   • Go to the app in Partner Center and create a new submission.
   • Upload the updated package that uses the new name.
   • For each language’s Store listing, open the Store listing page and in the Product name dropdown, select the new reserved name.
   • Review and update the description and any text where the old name appears.
4. Publish the updated submission
   After the submission is published, the Store listing will show the new name. If the app has multiple languages, repeat the Store listing update for each language.
5. (Optional) Clean up old names
   Once the app is successfully published with the new name, any old reserved names that are no longer needed can be deleted on the Manage app names page. Note that each app must always keep at least one reserved name.
   Also note: in Partner Center the app is listed under the first reserved name. For MSIX/MSI/PWA apps, to make the app appear under the new name in Partner Center, delete the original name after the rename is complete. For Marketplace solutions, use Make alias next to the new name so it appears under that name.

If a submission error appears stating that the name in the package is not one of the reserved app names, confirm that the package name exactly matches a reserved name and that the identity is correctly configured on the Product identity page.
